Woman, 23, ‘used car as weapon to mow down & kill boyfriend in “game of chicken” after they rowed at party’

A WOMAN used her car as a “weapon” to run over and kill her boyfriend after they rowed at a party, a court heard.

Alice Wood, 23, allegedly played a “game of chicken” with Ryan Watson, 24, as she deliberately drove her Ford Fiesta at him.

Chester Crown Court heard that she then hit Ryan under the car when she drove towards him a third time.

Staff at a nearby Chinese restaurant heard “life-threatening” screams as he was dragged 158 meters under the car, it said.

Wood then knocked on the door near where she stopped the vehicle and told the homeowner, “Please call 911. I think I ran over my boyfriend.”

When she was arrested on suspicion of murder, she told the police officer: “It’s good, I deserved it.”

Jurors were told that Wood and Ryan were at a party in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, for a beneficiary of brain injury charity Headway.

Ryan, who worked as a support worker for the organisation, was seen “having a good time, being friendly and a party guest, having fun and dancing”.

In comparison, Wood was “a bit cold” as if she was not “at her best”, the court heard.

One guest said she “clicked” with Ryan during the fight on May 6, 2022, but allegedly felt Wood “glaring” at her.

The pair left the party with Wood driving her boyfriend’s Fiat as they headed home.

After parking, she got into her own car where she reversed into Ryan – almost hitting him, the court heard.

Wood then allegedly drove backwards and forwards as her boyfriend drove away.

Jurors were told she drove straight into him, veering off the road to hit him.

Ryan was pulled under the front bumper and was trapped under the chassis of the car for almost 160 meters.

Andrew Ford KC, prosecuting, said: “Whilst we are deeply serious and tragic, we say this is a simple case.

“She lost her temper, had an argument with her boyfriend when they were drunk, in the car.

“Things got tough, he got out, kicked in the door and she lost her cool and used the car as a weapon.”

The court heard that Wood had 61 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 milliliters of breath, compared to the legal limit of 35.

She claimed that she drank two glasses of white wine, two glasses of rum and a glass of champagne.

Wood denies murder. The trial continues.
