3-Month-Old Baby Abandoned At Walmart After Attempted Shoplifting

A 3-month-old baby girl was abandoned at a Walmart in Philadelphia Thursday night, Philadelphia police confirmed to PEOPLE.

Two men and one woman dropped off a child at a convenience store located in the 4300 block of Byberry Road. Store security confronted the three suspects about a “suspected shoplifting,” according to Philadelphia police. After the three suspects were met by security guards, they fled the scene without the child.

Walmart security called Philadelphia police around 11 p.m. Thursday. Philadelphia Fire Department EMS transported the baby to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital. She was evaluated by medical professionals who reported her condition to be “good,” Philadelphia police said.

The Philadelphia Department of Human Services took custody of the child.

Philadelphia police said Philadelphia Inquirer that they believe the baby’s parents have been identified and have been contacted in the meantime. Authorities speculate that the child’s parents were not involved in the theft. An anonymous source from the police force said Philadelphia Inquirer that some of the suspects who abandoned the infant were allegedly not involved in the theft.

The Philadelphia Police Department’s Special Victims Unit (SVU) is currently investigating the incident, and no charges have been filed.
