ACOTAR Author Sarah J. Maas on Writing ‘Steamy’ Scenes: ‘I Can’t Look Most of My Family In The Eye’

Sarah J. Maas talks about some sensual scenes in her novels and they are truly blush-worthy. In an interview with TODAY on Tuesday, the author spoke with Jenna Bush Hager ahead of the release of her new novel House of Flame and Shadow. The book, which comes out today, is the latest addition to Maas Crescent City trilogy, and comes after her best-selling fantasy series Court of thorns and roses. ACOTAR it is known for its high-stakes fights, strong female protagonists, and steamy scenes. “I can’t look most of my family in the eye now,” Maas, 37, told Bush Hager of the scenes, the first in the film Court of thorns and roses. “I needed a glass of wine just to take the edge off. It felt like everyone was staring over my shoulder watching me write those dirty words, and then they thought, ‘Oh my God – my grandmother is going to read this’.”

Maas, who has written a total of 15 books, started writing when she was 16 years old. The author recalled that she was not always an avid reader, and only after her teacher encouraged her parents to take her to a bookstore and let her choose something to read, did she fall in love with fantasy. She was so enthralled by the genre that soon after she started writing her own novels.

“I told myself that even if it takes me until I’m 90 years old, I just want one book to be published,” she said. Maas has now sold more than 30 million copies of her novels and is a popular figure on BookTok, the book community on TikTok. “I’ve always been drawn to writing about women who can’t be put into any definable category,” the author said. “They can be very feminine, but then they go, like, take out you-know-what from the bad guys and save the world, and then they look good doing it.” Maas also reflected on what her writing career has been like now that she is a parent. Although she writes at a slower pace than before, she “makes it up on the fly”.

“Writing is my job, but being a mom is like a full-time job,” she said. “And that has become the most important thing in my life, to make sure that my children are not only happy and taken care of, but also that I am there for them.”

Maas, who said she hopes her books will bring “hope” to her readers, said she is already thinking about her next projects.
