dispute

Movie title sparks controversy

Adithya Menon’s Bollywood debut Main Hoon Part-Time Killer (2015) created controversy before its release due to its original title Main Hoon Rajinikanth. The film was originally scheduled to be released in 2014. Rajinikanth filed a civil suit in the Madras High Court against the film production company Varsha Productions, seeking to stop the distribution and screening of the film, citing unauthorized use of his name in the title, pictures, comics and his dialogues in the film style.

Rajinikanth claimed that the film was promoted as his biopic, which could defame him and offend his fans. However, the film’s director Faisal Saif denied the allegation and claimed that apart from his name, he did not use any image, caricature or personality traits of Rajinikanth in the film. He even organized a special screening of the film for Rajinikanth and his daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth at the AVM Preview Theater in Chennai on September 27, 2014, to prove that there was nothing objectionable about him in the film. On January 16, 2015, the court issued a stay order on the film as it violated Rajinikanth’s right to privacy and dignity. On February 3, 2015, the court pronounced its final verdict in favor of Rajinikanth and asked the film-makers to remove Rajinikanth from the film’s title, any kind of pictures, caricatures or his dialogue style. Later, the film’s title was changed to “Main Hoon” and it was released in northern India by Dimension Pictures on May 22, 2015. However, the film was not released in southern India to avoid legal trouble. In an interview, when asked about the ongoing legal dispute between the production house and Rajinikanth over the release of the film, Aditya replied:

Our film is a tribute to ‘thalaivar’ (Rajinikanth). It’s a comedic satire that will divide audiences. No one dares to show the bad side of Mr. Rajini through movies. How could we possibly do it. There is nothing in our film that defames Mr. Rajini except his name. I believe when people watch this movie they will realize that it is a clean comedy entertainer. Hope our movie will be released smoothly. We’ve finished filming. My director and producer will make the final decision on the matter.
