Alex Murdaugh, the disgraced ex-lawyer, is already facing a series of financial charges. According to new reports, Murdaugh has been charged with murder in the deaths of his wife and son. Murdaugh, 54, was indicted by a Colleton County grand jury on Thursday, July 14, on two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. He allegedly committed the heinous murders in June 2021.
Margaret Murdaugh, 52, and Paul Murdaugh, 22, were discovered with gunshot wounds on their family’s plantation in South Carolina. Murdaugh even reported their deaths to 911. The indictment did not provide much information to the public. The reason for the murders has not yet been clarified. On the other hand, it appears that Murdaugh killed the woman with a rifle and the child with a shotgun. Alex Murdaugh continues to deny the allegations and claims to have a solid alibi. On the day his wife and child were killed, he allegedly visited his mother and sick father.

Alex Murdaugh’s attorneys, Jim Griffin and Richard Harpootlian, maintained their client’s innocence and denied the murder charges against him. Attorneys representing Alex Murdaugh told The Daily Beast:
“He wants his family, friends and everyone to know that he had nothing to do with the murders of Maggie and Paul. He loved them more than anything on the planet.”
According to NBC News, detectives have camera evidence showing Murdaugh near the scene of the murder. In official statements, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) Chief Mark Keel and Attorney General Alan Wilson said the investigation is still ongoing.
Keel had this to say about the case:
“Over the past 13 months, SLED agents and our partners have worked tirelessly to build a case against the individual responsible for the murders of Maggie and Paul, and to rule out those who were not.”
He continued:
“The agents never lost sight of the probe. I was clear from the beginning that the goal was to guarantee that justice was served. Today marks another milestone in Maggie and Paul’s long journey to justice.”
State Attorney Alan Wilson also commented on the investigation:
“All of our officers and law enforcement agencies involved in this investigation were focused on achieving justice for the families of the victims. We want to congratulate the State Department of Law Enforcement, the attorneys and staff of our office and everyone who worked on this investigation for their tireless efforts to gather evidence and investigate it wherever it went.”
He thanked the Colleton County Grand Jury for “listening to that evidence and serving the people of South Carolina.”
What else is Murdaugh accused of?
Alex Murdaugh is also suspected of stealing millions of dollars from his 57-year-old maid, Gloria Satterfield, who died suddenly in his home in 2018. He also faces 71 charges of stealing $8.5 million from his customers. Murdaugh is also accused of stealing money from his family’s law practice. Murdaugh is also accused of illegally transferring millions of dollars in a conspiracy to distribute oxycodone. Meanwhile, the former lawyer blamed his actions on his drug addiction.
