Bindi Irwin, daughter of the late “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, grew up with her own family.
Bindi is the proud mother of daughter Grace Warrior Irwin Powell, 3, with her husband Chandler Powell. Couple they welcomed their first child on March 25, 2021, exactly one year after they tied the knot at the Australia Zoo.
In her August 2023 PEOPLE cover story, Bindi shared that she underwent surgery for endometriosis and called Grace her and Powell’s “little little miracle.”
Bindi added that she and Powell are “lucky to have Grace.” She explained, “there’s every chance we wouldn’t be able to have a little one, so we have our beautiful little girl, we’re so happy.”
Grace grows up with wild animals in the Australian zoo, where her family lives. Before her daughter was born, Bindi said A bump“I know in my heart that she will carve her own path to make our planet a better place through her connections with the beautiful animals we protect here at Australia Zoo and through conservation work around the world.”

Bindi and Powell welcomed Grace on their first wedding anniversary, March 25, 2021. In a post announcing their daughter’s arrival, the TV star called her husband and newborn “the two loves of her life” and wrote that her little girl “picked the perfect day birth.”
Powell also announced Grace’s arrival on Instagram, writing: “Thank you for treating your beautiful mother and I to our wedding anniversary, so excited to have you home.”
Her middle name is a tribute to Steve Irwin

Bindi paid tribute to her father Steve, who died in 2006, with her daughter’s middle names. While Grace’s first name comes from Bindi’s great-grandmother and cousins in the Powell family “dating back to the 1700s,” Bindi wrote on Instagram that Grace’s middle name, Warrior Irwin, is a tribute to Steve and “his legacy as the most amazing wildlife warrior.”
2023, said Bindi Hello! that Grace’s name only came to her after she gave birth. “When Grace was born, my first words as I held her in my arms were that she was our ‘graceful warrior,'” Bindi said. “Chandler and I knew right away that it should be her name. The name Grace Warrior is a perfect fit for our daughter and seems like the perfect way to honor the greatest wildlife warrior who ever lived, my dad.”
She had her first “meeting with a crocodile” when she was 1 week old

A week after her birth, Grace’s grandmother Terri Irwin and uncle Robert Irwin celebrated April Fool’s Day with a family photo of the new baby surrounded by Crocs — shoes, not reptiles!
Robert wrote: “Grace’s first experience with crocs!!! 🐊 #April Fools.”
She met animals at an early age

Given that her family lives in an Australian zoo, it’s no surprise that Grace has been around animals since she was a newborn. A few weeks after her birth, grandmother Terri shared a photo of Grace next to some chickens at the zoo.
Powell and Bindi also shared photos of their daughter’s encounters with animals, including pictures of Grace next to kangaroos, turtles and koalas.
“We are so proud of our Wildlife Warrior princess. I know our sweet girl will grow up caring for Mother Earth and all her animals,” Bindi wrote on Instagram in honor of Grace’s one-month birthday.

Grace is officially part of the “khaki crew”, the nickname Bindi uses for her family when they wear their uniforms at the Australia Zoo. Binda’s daughter got her first pair of khakis when she was just 1 month old, she twinned with her dad in an Instagram post celebrating the milestone.
In 2022, Bindi posted another picture of Grace in khakis and a big smile, along with which she wrote: “Khaki isn’t just a color, it’s an attitude.🤎.”

Less than two weeks after celebrating their daughter’s first birthday at the Australia Zoo, Powell and Bindi shared a video of Grace reaching the big milestone.
The short clip showed Grace walking alone from Bindi to Powell, who captured the big moment. They captioned the video simply, “The Big Moment 💙.”
She is “passionate about the natural world”

Grace inherited her love of the wild from the Irwin family. At the 2023 gala honoring her late father, Bindi told PEOPLE, “She just loves wildlife and is so excited to learn more. It’s really amazing to see how passionate she is about the natural world.”
Bindi said that even though Grace was only 2 at the time, she knew the names of many animals. “She’s just talking about all these different dinosaur names that we don’t know how she knows them all,” Bindi added. “It’s unreal. I mean, I guess it’s part of the family.”
Her family celebrates her “non-birthday” every year.

Grace’s family has a tradition of celebrating what they call “non-birthdays.” Bindi described the tradition on Instagram as celebrating when you “turn half a year old,” in the middle of your birthday.
For Grace’s second “unbirthday” in September 2023, Bindi’s little girl was allowed to pick whatever she wanted from the elephant shop at Australia Zoo.

In her May 2022 cover story for PEOPLE, Bindi shared that Grace is deeply connected to her late grandfather Steve. “We have so many documentaries about Dad and we always play them for Grace,” Bindi said. “It’s so much fun watching her study him. I didn’t realize how much Dad’s passion for life and his animated facial expressions — I mean, they mesmerize her.”
According to Bindi, Grace stares at her grandfather “in complete and utter fascination” and “hangs on his every word.” She added: “Whether he’s talking about a crocodile or a spider, she thinks he’s amazing.”
Bindi also said she “definitely sees parts” of her father in Grace. “His determination and his inability to sit still. I think that’s really special. I’m excited to see how her personality develops as she develops,” she said.
Bindi added that she thinks Steve would have been just as obsessed with Grace: “If Dad had been around, we honestly would never have seen her. He would be in love.”
