All About Warren Beatty and Annette Bening's 4 Kids

Warren Beatty and Annette Bening have been parents for more than three decades.

The couple had their first child, Stephen, in 1992, just a month after the premiere of their first film together, Bugsy. Son Benjamin arrived two years later, in 1994, followed by daughter Isabel in 1997 and Ella in 2000.

In 2004, Annette told PEOPLE that she took a few steps back from her career to spend time with her family. “I couldn’t go from picture to picture,” she said. “I’m too interested in other things in life, like being with my kids and being with my husband.”

When she was working, she often took her children with her, like when she was shooting a movie Julia in Budapest and London. “They get to see the world in a way that you don’t if you’re just a tourist,” the actress told PEOPLE of her children’s European experience.

Annette also praised her husband’s parenting. “He’s a fantastic dad. He’s just charming, very thoughtful, very communicative,” she said.

Stephen Beatty, 32

Warren and Annette’s oldest child, Stephen Ira Beatty, was born on January 8, 1992. Stephen arrived a month after the film’s release Bugsythe film his parents made when they first met.

Warren and Annette previously confirmed their pregnancy with their first child in 1991, when Warren faxed a message to PEOPLE that read, “As you might have guessed, I still avoid talking to the press about personal matters, but I can tell you that I could. you will have a child with Annette.”

In 2012, Stephen said he began transitioning from female to male in his early teens. “My name is Stephen,” he said in a video made for We Happy Trans, according to ABC News. “I identify as a trans man.”

Although Stephen didn’t talk about his parents in his video, both Warren and Annette made it clear that they love and support their older son. 2019, said Annette AARP that she is “very, very proud” of Stephen.

“He has managed something that is very challenging with great style and great intelligence,” she said. “He’s an articulate, thoughtful person.”

Recently, in January 2024, Annette opened on View about feeling “protective” of Stephen when he first came out.

“At first I felt very protective of his privacy, because he is the son of these two famous people,” Nyad said the actress. “So I felt very protective and felt it was his right to say what he wanted to say publicly or not.”

She went on to explain how she became an outspoken advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community, “And now, as time goes on — especially now with what’s unfortunately happening in the political process, [with how] trans people are used — fear and ignorance are fueled against trans people in the most horrific way. It’s so unfair.”

She continued: “And I feel very, very strongly about that… we don’t need people to be fear-mongering.”

Benjamin Beatty, 30

Warren and Annette had a son, Benjamin Beatty, on August 23, 1994.

In 2016, Warren mentioned Ben in an interview with AARPtelling the newspaper that his “head is spinning” because his younger son was having dinner with him that night. “I’m an attentive father,” he said. “I have to fight a little not to be too careful.”

The younger son also followed in the actor’s footsteps. In 2016, Ben starred in a movie Hail, Caesar!and two years later, he graced the screen again in a movie UFO.

While speaking with PEOPLE in 2022, Annette revealed that she’s always wanted to be a mother, saying that having a family was “something I’ve always wanted to do, ever since I was little, as soon as I started babysitting, at 12 or 13, was I’m the nanny next door. It’s always come naturally to me.”

Isabel Beatty, 27

Warren and Annette’s third child, daughter Isabel Beatty, was born on January 11, 1997.

Her Instagram account is public and offers a glimpse into her personal life, including her younger sister’s graduation party and the Thanksgiving spread she, Ella and Annette prepared.

In April 2022, Isabel shared a sweet photo of her father celebrating his 85th birthday on X (formerly Twitter). Alongside the photo, she wrote: “I’m deleting this in a bit but I think it’s so cute so I’m posting,” before later adding a reply that read: “I’m not deleting, the energy is too cute to delete!”

Ella Beatty, 24

Warren and Annette’s fourth child, daughter Ella Beatty, joined the family on April 8, 2000.

In May 2022, Ella graduated from Julliard. A few months before that, her mom revealed to PEOPLE that she was an empty nester.

“Sometimes it’s hard for me to let go and just remember, ‘Oh, that’s not my job anymore.’ I’m so proud of these grown kids, who aren’t kids, but they’re my kids,” she said. “They’re all so different and they’re all out there discovering themselves and their voices. We think we’re here to teach them, and, of course, what we realize is that they’re teaching us everything.”

In October 2022, Ella announced on Instagram that she had joined the Ryan Murphy series Feud: Capote vs Swans. She got the role of Kerry O’Shea — the daughter of Truman Capote’s lover, John O’Shea. The show premiered in January 2024.

That same month, Ella spoke to PEOPLE about her “icon” mom and the acting advice her parents gave her. Annette and Warren told her that “[be] kind, treat people with respect, work hard and be grateful.”

In March 2024, Ella reached another acting milestone when she made her Broadway debut. In the play, she shared the stage with actress Sarah Paulson Appropriate.
