Relationship and marriage with Shrien Dewani

Anni Dewani and Shrien Dewani were in a relationship for a year before getting married. They met in 2009 through mutual friends. At the time, she was living in Sweden; however, they moved to the UK in May 2010 and announced their engagement that same month. The couple got married on October 29, 2010 at Powai Lake near Mumbai, India. Shortly after their wedding, they also decided to arrange a reception in 2011 for those who missed the wedding.

In November 2010, Anni Dewani and Shrien Dewani decided to stay in South Africa’s Kruger National Park for four nights and landed at Cape Town International Airport on November 7, 2010. The couple hired a taxi driver named Zola Tongo from the Cape Grace Hotel in South Africa.

The two rented a Zola Tongo taxi to tour and roam around the city until November 13, 2010. They visited a grill restaurant (Mzolis) in Gugulethu and went to a surf restaurant and resort called The Strand in Western Cape Town. Soon after eating, they moved back to Guguletu Town. The duo’s taxi was hijacked at gunpoint by two gunmen on the main road leading to Gugulethu. The taxi driver was pushed out of the taxi by the robbers after driving a short distance, while Shrien Dewani was also pushed out of the taxi after driving for 20 minutes. The robbers snatched away all the valuables and money from Shrien Dewani and then pushed him out of the taxi. Passers-by helped Slien call the police and informed them of the holdup and robbery. On November 14, 2010, the day after the hijacking, the Western Cape police discovered the body of Anni Dewani in Lingelethu West in the back seat of the same Volkswagen Sharan taxi they were traveling in. A police statement said Anne’s Giorgio Armani watch, platinum and diamond bracelet, handbag, BlackBerry and other valuables were missing and the case was reported as robbery.

Anne Devaney’s autopsy report said she died from a gunshot fired through her hand and directly into her neck. Bruises on her legs suggested she struggled before being shot; however, there were no signs of any sexual assault. On 17 November 2010, the Western Cape Police released the body of Anni Dewani to her family and husband. Six months after her death, Anni Dewani’s family buried her ashes in Vänern Lake, Anne’s favorite place. Lives in Mariestad, Sweden.

Disclosure to friends and media

Following Anne’s murder, mutual friends of Anne and Shrien Devaney revealed at a media conference that the couple often fought and argued. They are all willful. A friend of Anni Dewani also said that Anni broke up in January 2010; however, they mended their differences soon after. Shrien reportedly suffered from complications from low hormones, which affected his ability to have children. However, Anne wanted to have a child, and in order to realize her wish, Slim prepared to undergo treatment. Meanwhile, news emerged that Slim was bisexual and had affairs with gay Birmingham prostitutes. This news was confirmed by Shrien Dewani himself, who admitted that he is gay during the court trial.

Arrest and court proceedings

Western Cape police arrested Xolile Mngeni on November 16, 2021 based on phone records, CCTV footage and handprints found in a taxi. Xolile Mngeni admitted that he, together with Mziwamadoda Qwabe, hijacked a taxi with the intention of robbing. Mgeni further admitted that Mziwamadoda Qwabe shot Anni Dewani while snatching her handbag. Mngeni was also allowed to speak to an intermediary named “Monde Mbolombo”, who was arrested by police on 18 November 2010.

In a statement to police, Mziwamadoda Qwabe said the couple were victims of a robbery. During further investigation, Qwabe changed his story on the same day, within five hours of first stating that her husband, Shrien Dewani, was the mastermind behind his wife’s murder. On November 20, 2021, taxi driver Zola Tongo also admitted that Shrien Dewani planned the murder of his wife.

He also claimed Shrien paid the gang £1,400 to kill his wife. In February 2011, the robber, Mziwamadoda Qwabe, was sentenced to 25 years in prison under Section 105A.

The second robber, Xolile Mngeni, was also sentenced to life in prison, but during the court proceedings he fell victim to a brain tumor and died at Goodwood Center of Excellence Prison on October 18, 2014.

Taxi driver ‘Zola Tongo’ was sentenced to 18 years in prison in Malmesbury. Shrien Dewani was cleared of all murder charges in 2014 after proving his innocence and placing the blame on the three main accused.

After the sentencing, Anne Devaney’s family said at a media conference outside the court that they were denied the right to know the truth about why Anne was killed after Schlien was acquitted by the court. they said,

Monde Mbolombo was not punished and was released on a warning under Section 204 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The Attorney General delivered judgment on 19 November 2015 and awarded compensation for the murder of Anni Dewani.

On November 14, 2010, Anni Dewani’s body was found in the back of a taxi in Gugulethu, South Africa. Western Cape police investigating the case said the taxi driver was thrown out of the vehicle and the two robbers then got out of the taxi with the couple inside.
