Bachelor’with Jonathan Johnson reflecting on why he didn’t receive the final rose from Jenn Tran.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Jonathan talks about being eliminated from the show after the fantasy pack and what he would do differently if he could go back in time.
“I’ve never been good at validating my own feelings — I think a lot of people struggle with validating their own feelings,” he explains. “And I discovered that on the show, especially with Jenna’s help. So I mean, going forward, I’m just going to say, ‘Hey, do you like this person? Do you like this person? Are you sad? Are you happy? What do you want from this?’ And I just allow myself to feel whole.”

Adding that he’s working on being able to “feel my feelings,” Jonathan recalls bringing Jenn home to meet his family and trying to find the right way to express his feelings to her — especially when he knew America was watching.
“It was crazy, to pull up to my mom’s house and see this whole group of people I’ve spent the last six weeks with in my actual reality was fantastic,” he says. “I say, ‘You’re a producer, you’re a producer and you’re a cameraman. And I’ve known you for six weeks, not at home, and now you’re in my space.'”
“But then when I went there, I think having my hometown and being able to meet my family with Jenn was what opened my eyes to helping myself get there,” he adds, referring to the use of the word ” love” with her.
In last week’s episode, after telling Jenn, “I don’t want to say ‘love’ if I’m not completely there” before introducing her to her family, Jenn told him he needed to get his emotions straight. He ended up saying, “Jennifer Tran, I’m falling in love with you,” but now he tells PEOPLE it was too late by then.
“It’s only my fault that I couldn’t develop those feelings further,” he adds, noting: “[My family] had nothing but great things to say. And honestly, since it aired, and they obviously know I’m not with her, they’ve been freaking out. They say: ‘We loved her. She was amazing. We could see you having an amazing life together.’”

However, this will not be Jonathan’s last attempt at love on screen. During Men say everything special On August 27, he was the first person to be invited to join the upcoming season Bachelor in Paradise, which he accepted.
“I wish someone would warn me so I wouldn’t just sit there and laugh like an idiot,” he jokes. “Because I literally heard it and I was like, ‘Wow.'”
Jonathan admits that he has never seen him BiP, and he didn’t even look Bachelor or Bachelor until he found out he got the part. Then he watched Joey Graziadei’s season, which featured Jenn, but says he doesn’t know much more than that.
“I guess I’m in the nation now,” he says with a laugh.
While he hasn’t set his sights on anyone in particular yet, he tells PEOPLE that he’s going to start researching potential new love interests.
“I was so wrapped up in myself and the season ahead that I didn’t even have a chance to look,” he says.
