Last year, Gerwig said W magazine about her directing style and how she thinks her acting experience shapes the way she works.

“I think there’s an advantage to being an actor who directs,” she said. “I know how vulnerable and scary it is. Margot [Robbie] said, ‘Just so you know, a week before we start filming, I’m going to doubt I’ll ever be able to do it,’ and I said, ‘I totally know that feeling. Go ahead and have that feeling.’ ”

“And she said, ‘Once we get going, I’ll feel more like, ‘Okay, I’m in it now. I know how to do it.’ “I feel deeply for that and I’m trying to figure out how to make them feel safe,” Gerwig added.

Gerwig admitted that she still feels like she’s starting from scratch every time she directs a new project. (She will steer next Chronicles of Narnia adaptations for Netflix.)

“Before committing [Lady Bird]I thought, ‘Well, once I do that, then I’ll feel like, ‘Yes, I’m a director.”’ And then I didn’t feel that way,” she recalled to W. “I had all the same fears going into the second one. And I thought, ‘Well, but after the second one, then I’ll definitely feel like a director.’ And then that feeling never came and I realized I didn’t think it would come.”

“You feel like a beginner in whatever project you’re on,” the director explained. “My experience with the first film was that I’m going to have to do it before I feel like I can, because if I wait until I feel like I can, I’ll never do it.”
