Behind the Scenes of Paige DeSorbo’s People StyleWatch Shoot

It was a triple-H day in New York (that would be foggy, hot and humid), and thanks to a malfunctioning air conditioner, it was even worse inside the building where the PEOPLE StyleWatch shoot took place.

“At one point we measured it was almost 100 degrees inside,” recalls makeup artist Sierra Matthews. “On top of that, we were looking at fall, so she had all these layers on. The fact that the girl didn’t break a sweat at all was a real miracle.”

Inspired by the reality star’s “naturally stunning” features, Matthews gave DeSorbo a look she describes as the “elevated version of herself,” adding, “I wanted her to feel comfortable, natural and elegant.”

Matthews primed her skin with Weleda Skin Food, saying: “It’s a staple in my glamorous style. It’s almost like a primer, but it’s a strong moisturizing cream. On a day like today, when you’re touching up a million times, having something that’s really snug underneath will help her last all day.” She applied a light layer of Make Beauty Diffusion Dew and used Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish powder to touch up.

Focusing on DeSorb’s eyes, she took a page from Olive Culpo’s bridal makeup manual and ditched the mascara. “Paige has such a beautiful eye shape and these rich dark eyes that she doesn’t need so much product on them,” she explained. Instead, she highlighted them using a mix of shades from two different Dior Backstage Glow Palettes (in shades 001 and 002) and the Pat McGrath Labs Mothership Eyeshadow Palette in Subliminal.

Matthews also dressed up her lips by lightly lining her cupid’s bow and under her bottom lip with Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Liner in a muted mauve to “give her a doll look without looking too artificial.” She complemented it with Dior Addict Lip Glow in the color 001 Pink.

The finishing touch: a swipe of Chanel Baume Essentiel, a hydrating highlighting balm, on the star’s cheekbones. “I wanted to make sure they were hitting the light the right way and the Chanel stick really does a great job of making everything look dewy,” she says.

When it came to DeSorbo’s hair, stylist Mitchell Ramazon opted for “movement and body” so she could “toss” it around during the shoot. After curling each section of hair, he twirled it around his finger and secured it with a clip to cool. He then brushed the curls and sprayed them with Living Proof Flex hairspray.

For her bangs, he applied some Living Proof Texturizing Mousse and used a flat brush and blow dryer to smooth out any bumps. He finished with a small round brush to add the perfect amount of curl.

With her glam glam-ing, industrial fans in full force and hip hop playing over the speakers, DeSorbo was ready to storm the racks of clothes put together by stylist Natalie Cantell.

“I leaned into what I saw gravitating to on my Instagram,” says Cantell. “She obviously likes a more directional look that feels polished but a bit edgy.” And since the issue’s theme is denim, he says that translated into “modern and unexpected” pieces inspired by the “cool cuts and really editorial silhouettes” seen on the fall runways.

Of all the chic styles, it’s no surprise that DeSorbo gravitated towards Alaïa draped denim. “It’s such a unique piece,” Cantell says. “It seems a bit dramatic at first, but it ends up being so chic and sophisticated that you can’t help but feel good in it.”

Cantell also incorporated some of the upcoming season’s biggest trends into DeSorbo looks and promises they’re easy to pull off in real life.

“Burgundy is about to make a big entrance in the fall, it’s going to feel like a neutral,” she says. Another hot tip: keep wearing your summer cream denim until fall,” because it “brings freshness to a fall look, whether you pair it with colors or neutrals.” Finally, she says you can’t go wrong with a denim jacket in a non-traditional shape or silhouette , like the Zimmermann and Acler DeSorbo styles modeled after the shoot.
