Officers are continuing to investigate Jay’s death and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Police arrested a man in his 60s nearby on suspicion of manslaughter – who was later released on bail.

Cumbria Police said officers secured a firearm at the scene.

The Sun understands the pair were on land hunting rabbits.

A source told us: “They had permission to be on the land. There was an agreement for years to raise rabbits there.”

One of the local tenants who uses the pasture said they believed those involved could be members of the traveling community.

They said, “We’re just renting that land… There’s a gypsy fair at Brough Hill, so it’s obviously some of them. That’s the rumor going around.”

Another person added that they did not know the boy but believed he was from outside the local area.

They added: “Actually I don’t know him. I don’t think he’s from our area. I think he was someone from outside the area, as far as I can tell.”

The famous Appleby Horse Fair, which attracts around 10,000 travelers each year, is about six miles from the scene of the tragedy.

Another farmer who works the land also said the child’s family was “deeply upset”.

“It was a tragic accident,” he told The Sun.

“I’m sorry for the family, our thoughts are with them. It’s deeply upsetting.”

It is understood the farm near the field where the shooting took place has no livestock – but rents out its land for sheep grazing.

However, next to the land where the schoolboy died is the training ground of the Ministry of Defense.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defense confirmed that it was not involved.

‘THE WORST TRAGEDY’

Local resident Frank Chalmers, 73, said he saw five police cars and an ambulance at the scene at around 3pm as he walked past to his home in nearby Brough.

He told The Sun: “I was just driving past when I saw the police and an ambulance.

“It is the most terrible tragedy for the family and the community.”

Another witness said: “We saw two CSI men in white suits on the field, it was after 4pm.”

Someone else reported: “The CSI trail seemed to go uphill and lead left through a hedge, with markings.”

A third shared: “Serious incident near Warcop at or before 3pm with crime scene investigators and medical rescue helicopter and at least five police vehicles, one on the ground.”

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: “Police are investigating the death of an eight-year-old boy.

“Emergency services were called to a farm in the Warcop area at around 2.50pm yesterday (September 28) following reports that a child had been seriously injured by a firearm on the property.

“Police and NWAS were present.

“The firearm was secured by the police at the scene, and the eight-year-old boy was taken to the hospital by ambulance with serious, life-threatening head and facial injuries.

“Unfortunately, the boy died overnight.

“Officers arrested a 60-year-old man at the scene on suspicion of GBH assault.

“He remains in police custody but has now been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.”
