Bruce Springsteen’s 3 Kids: All About Evan, Jessica and Samuel

Although fans know him as The Boss, Bruce Springsteen’s kids just call him Dad.

The Grammy winner shares three children with his wife and fellow E Street Band member Patti Scialfa: Evan, 33, Jessica, 32, and Samuel, 29.

Despite numerous accolades, Born to run the singer says that his children are not well versed in his music catalog.

“We had children late, I was 40 years old when our first son was born, and they showed a healthy lack of interest in our work throughout the years,” he told The New York Times in 2017. “They had their musical heroes, they had their music that they were interested in. They would be pretty speechless if someone mentioned the title of my song.”

He echoed those sentiments in November 2022, saying on The Graham Norton Show, “Now they’re almost not interested in music or that part of my life. … But like I always say, ‘They don’t need a hero, they need a father.’ ”

Springsteen also said his children haven’t read his best-selling memoir, but the lack of fan adoration doesn’t bother him.

“I know none of my kids have read the book, although I imagine one day maybe they will. I kind of like that,” he said, adding, “I’ve always looked at it as we did a good job.”

Evan James Springsteen, 33

Springsteen and Scialfa had their first child, son Evan James, on July 25, 1990.

In an episode of the Springsteen and Barack Obama podcast, Renegades: Born in the USAthe “Dancing in the Dark” singer revealed how his life changed after Evan’s arrival.

“It’s a gift you get from your children and from your wife,” said the father of three. “Your recognition of your new self. And the realization of your manhood. It was huge. You know, I woke up. I felt like someone, not necessarily someone different, but someone much further down the road than I thought I’d ever get.”

Although Evan, who is also a musician, was the most private of his siblings, he went out to special events with his family and even joined his parents on stage.

In 2020, his famous father addressed Boston College’s Class of 2024 at their first academic convocation and recognized his oldest son, who graduated from the school in 2012.

“It’s going to be unforgettable and the ride of your life. My son, who graduated from this very institution, told me that,” Springsteen shared in a Zoom call with the incoming freshmen. “You will spend the next four years living in a place where the life of the mind is paramount. The life of the mind is a beautiful thing.”

Jessica Rae Springsteen, 32

Springsteen’s only daughter, Jessica Rae, was born on December 30, 1991. She is a professional equestrian who began riding horses at a young age on the family’s 300-acre farm in Colts Neck Township, New Jersey.

“I started riding when I was really little. My mom always wanted to ride, so when we moved to New Jersey, she started taking lessons,” Jessica told PEOPLE. “Our home is right across from one of the best junior training stables – and I went straight to it when I was a teenager.”

She graduated from Duke University in 2014. During her college career, she made her first Olympic bid, which she told PEOPLE was an “amazing experience.”

She added: “It’s important to pick the time and have the right horse at the right time, and that everything goes well, so that’s definitely something I’m working on – and I’ll keep working until I get there.”

Her opportunity to compete came in 2021 when the cavalry was selected to join Team USA at the 2020 Summer Olympics, which were postponed to summer 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On August 7, 2021, she took home the silver medal in the team diving competition.

With Jessica’s success came questions about her famous parents. “I’m just trying to stay focused on what I’m doing and what I’m here for,” she told reporters in 2021. “I’ve been so thankful that my parents have supported me throughout my career.”

She added: “They were on this trip for me. It was a big dream for them too. So I’m very happy to make them proud. And I’m just trying to focus on what I’m here to do.”

In May 2023, Scialfa updated her Instagram followers on Jessica’s latest equestrian accomplishments. She shared a video of her daughter jumping a horse with the caption “Jess & Don Juan help the @usajumping team win the Nations Cup!!!!😍🇺🇸🥇.”

Samuel Ryan Springsteen, 29

The couple welcomed their youngest child, son Samuel Ryan, on January 5, 1994.

On January 15, 2014, Scialfa announced on Instagram that Sam had graduated from the Monmouth County Fire Academy. He took the civil service exam in 2017 to become a firefighter in the state of New Jersey.

In August 2019, his proud mom announced that he officially became a firefighter with the Jersey City Fire Department. Sam was one of 15 sworn in before the mayor of Jersey City, New Jersey in January 2020.

“It’s been a long road, he’s been very committed for a few years and we’re excited for him today,” Springsteen told CBS New York at the time of his son.

In 2022, Sam had his first child with his partner, making Springsteen and Scialfa grandparents for the first time.
