Carey Mulligan, Stephen Fry, Sarah Lancashire and more have made King Charles’ New Year’s Honors List 2025.
The honors are usually given in the new year and on the monarch’s official birthday, which is celebrated every June, and celebrates the contributions of celebrities, government officials and even ordinary people who have served their communities in extraordinary ways.
Among those recognized in this year’s New Year honors list are two doctors who are believed to have been part of the king’s medical team as he treated him for cancer this year — the type and stage of which remain unknown to the public.

This year, Kralj (76) awarded dr. Douglas Glass and Professor Richard Leach. Per Hello!Ph.D. Glass is the king’s apothecary and also served as apothecary to Queen Elizabeth – and “was medical expert at Balmoral when she died”, the media reported.
Professor Leach is a consultant physician at the private King Edward VIII’s Hospital in London, “where members of the royal family have been treated for decades,” the release said.
“It is not uncommon for doctors in the Royal Family to receive personal honours,” the paper continued, citing the late Queen’s decision to knight her head of the medical household, Sir Huw Thomas, in 2021.

Both Mulligan and Lancashire were appointed Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), with Lancashire calling the accolade “an unexpected delight”, according to Hello!. For his part, Fry said he felt “surprised and charmed” after receiving a knighthood for his services to mental health and environmental awareness.
Other notable names honored in this iteration include Gareth Southgate, the former manager of the England national football team, and London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who were both knighted in the New Year Honours. Sadiq — who has been mayor of London since 2016 — said he was “truly humbled” to receive the honour.
More than 1,200 people across the UK have been honoured, including athletes, entertainers and political figures, ranging from two 18-year-olds to one 103-year-old.

According to the BBC, both New Year’s and birthday honors are awarded by the king on the recommendation of the prime minister or senior government ministers. The public can also nominate people for the award, and those nominations typically make up about 25% of all nominations, according to the agency.
Honors are usually conferred during the year by the King, Prince William (Prince of Wales) or Princess Anne (Princess Royal) during investitures at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle or the Palace of Holyroodhouse, located in Edinburgh, Scotland. Recipients can choose when and where their investiture takes place, but not which member of the royal family will bestow the honor upon them.
