Chris Evans Teased Michael Cera After He Revived ‘Scott Pilgrim’ Cast Email 9 Years Later, Says Creator

Michael Cera could be partly to thank for that Scott Pilgrim takes off.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming anime series — based on the 2010 film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World — creator Bryan Lee O’Malley recalled an old email chain where most of the film’s main cast was involved during the making of the film.

“The cast talked a lot about this email chain, but there’s one detail that I don’t think anyone mentioned,” said O’Malley, 44. “We were emailing while the movie was coming out, and then the thread went dormant about nine years.”

“Then, before this anime was even on the list, Michael Cera responded to a meme that someone sent like no time had passed. He just said, ‘Oh, that’s funny,'” added O’Malley, who has also created Scott Pilgrim series of graphic novels on which the film and the upcoming series are based.

One person who responded? Chris Evans, who reprises his role as the villainous Lucas Lee to Cera’s titular hero. (The two later acted together in a play The hero of the lobbywhich marked Evans’ Broadway debut in 2018)

“Chris Evans responded like, ‘Michael, what the hell are you doing answering this email from nine years ago?’ And then we all started talking again,” O’Malley said.

And while “they were all quite young [they] made a movie,” built relationships that have stood the test of time over the past decade and more.

“We all felt like family, and I think we have ever since,” O’Malley said EW.

The film, directed by Edgar Wright, follows Toronto teenager Scott (Cera, 35) as he travels through a fantastical alternate reality where he must battle his love interest Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) with “seven evil exes” — the other being Evans’ Lucas Lee — to the death, beating them in video game-style battles to win her heart.

Cera, Evans, 42, and Winstead, 38, reprise their roles in the animated series — as well as the rest of the main cast, including Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells, Anna Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim, Brie Larson as Envy Adams, Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers, Brandon Routh as Todd Ingram, Mae Whitman as Roxie Richter, Ellen Wong as Knives Chau and others.

O’Malley will serve as showrunner and executive producer for Scott Pilgrim takes off along with BenDavid Grabinski, who is known for Are you afraid of the dark?. Abel Góngora from Adventure time will direct, and Wright, 49, will also serve as an executive producer.

“One of the proudest and most enjoyable accomplishments of my career has been assembling and working with the dynamite cast of Scott Pilgrim,” Wright said in a Netflix press release when the series was first announced in March. “Since the release of the film in 2010, we’ve done Q&A’s, reminiscences and charity readings, but there’s never been a chance to get the whole gang back together on an actual project. Until now…”
