Chris Perfetti Feels ‘Very Attached’ to His Abbott Elementary Costars: ‘These People Are My Family Now’ (Exclusive)

Chris Perfetti is excited to be back on screen and on set with the cast Abbott Elementary School.

While appearing on the latest episode of PEOPLE at 10, the 35-year-old actor explains what it was like to be back on set with his co-stars and what fans can expect from this season of the docu-sitcom.

“Season 3 of Abbott Elementary School it’s going to blow your mind,” he says. “I feel like we’re back and we’re better than ever.”

Although the season will be shorter than the previous two due to a break in filming during the writers’ strike, Perfetti says that only highlights the cast’s ability to connect with their audience. He teases that “the laughs come faster” this season.

When it comes to how he resonates with his character Jacob now that the show has reached its third season, he says he’s seen a deeper level of character development.

“I think I’m learning more and more by filming TV, you can’t hide from yourself,” he explains.

“I don’t think Jacob is like me at all, but Quint [Brunson] he obviously saw something in me that resonated with her idea of this character, and the more we do it, you get permission to believe that you are that person,” says Brunson, who created, executive produced, co-wrote and also stars in the show.

“Where Chris ends and Jacob begins is kind of a mystery at the moment,” he adds.

Along with getting to know his character better, Perfetti also says the cast of the award-winning series has become like a family. Their relationship is something he says he knew was “special” from the start of the show.

“Right now I feel very attached to mine Abbott family,” he says. “It’s a real gift to be able to play a character for as long as I’ve been Jacob, and these people are now my family — there was a connection from the beginning.”

During a series of quick questions, Perfetti admits from his co-stars that he’d most like to be stranded on a desert island with Janelle James, swap lives with Brunson, and sing at a karaoke party with Sheryl Lee Ralph.

Perfetti also reveals that the cast is collectively connected to the city where the show takes place – Philadelphia.

“I feel like you can’t be a part of this show and not root for the Eagles at this point, and knowing all the slang, throwing it around like you’ve been in Philly your whole life,” he jokes.

Crediting the writers of the hit series, Perfetti says he and his co-stars don’t often improvise during filming (though he admits that dumpster diving this season was his preferred act).

“We’re so blessed to write this show, I’d say the real feel is improvisation on set Abbot Basic, but most of the time I feel like it’s just not necessary,” he says. “Anything I come up with in the moment is usually not as good as what they wrote.”
