Christina Applegate Recalls ‘Crying Every Night’ During Breast Cancer Journey

Christina Applegate loved sharing all about her breast cancer journey — the good and the bad.

During a conversation with Dax Shepard about the last episode of the series Armchair expert podcast, Applegate, 52, expressed regret for not being open and honest about how she felt after her 2008 diagnosis and double mastectomy.

“I learned that lesson the hard way because in 2008, when I had breast cancer at the age of 36, I went out and was a good girl talking about, ‘Oh, I love my new boobs,’ which are all scarred and yuck. – –ed up. What was I thinking?” she said.

“My first interview was with Robin Roberts when I had cancer, and I’m sitting there lying about how I felt,” Applegate continued.

The Married with children The alum said she got up after the interview and “literally fell into the wall” and started sobbing “because it was a lie.”

“Everything I said was a fucking lie. I was trying to convince myself of something, and I don’t think it helped anyone,” she said. “Yes, I started a foundation right away. Yes, I did everything I had to do and we raised millions of dollars for women who were at high risk for MRIs. Yes, we did a good thing, but on the back end, I was taking off my bra and cried every night. And I wish I had said that.”

The actress used the lesson to encourage a “friend who is in the public eye” to open up about their cancer journey.

Applegate recalled immediately telling her friend to take down the social media post saying, “If there’s anyone who can beat it, it’s going to be me.”

“I said, ‘Take it off,'” Applegate recalled. “I said, ‘Put it down right now because somebody’s mom just died, and she was pretty strong. Somebody’s daughter just died, somebody’s sister just died, somebody’s dad just died from this. Take it down.’ I said, ‘What you’re going to do is you’re going to be honest every step of the way through your chemotherapy, radiation, all that stuff.’ ”

“In the end, what she did really helped people,” Applegate added.
