DD Lapang or Dr. Donwa Dethwelson Lapang is an Indian politician and Chief Minister of Meghalaya. He held public office four times during his political career. He was born on April 10, 1934, in Nongjri village, Ri Bhoi, Meghalaya, India. He is 84 years old this year.

Education and Careers
He was educated at Government High School, Shillong and received his BA from St. Anthony’s College, Shillong. From an early age, he started working with his mother at her tea stall. He then worked as a road worker. Before becoming a politician, he held many jobs. He worked as a school teacher for 5 years. He also worked in the Assam Civil Secretariat and was promoted as a junior assistant as a typist. He also served as deputy superintendent of schools for ten years. Later, he joined politics in 1972 and contested the Legislative Assembly elections from Nongpoh LA constituency and even won as MLA. He subsequently served as the chief minister of Meghalaya four times. In September 2018, he resigned from the Congress Party and accused the Indian National Congress of treating senior members of the party unkindly.

He was born in a poor family. His father Donwa War is a tailor and his mother runs a tea stall. His father died when he was 5 years old. After his father died, he often helped his mother at her tea stall. In 1958, he married journalist Amethyst Lynda Jomes Blah. They have a son and a daughter.
