βThe First Lady of Song,β Newport News resident and jazz icon Ella Fitzgerald, is the theme song for the musical event.
A living example of today, Fitzgerald was born in Newport News in 1917. His home was just a few blocks from what was once an all-white high school. The Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center is what it is today. His name is on the 276-seat cinema. From April 20-22, 2023, it will host the 25th Annual Ella Fitzgerald Music Festival.
The Christopher Newport University Jazz Ensemble and Heritage High Singers, along with Friday’s Good Shot Judy, will perform during the three-day event.
