Emma Coronel Aispuro is the wife of Mexican drug trafficker Joaquín Guzmán, better known as “El Chapo.” Emma rose to fame during El Chapo’s trial in New York in 2019. At the time, El Chapo’s close friend Damaso López Núñez testified that Emma helped plan and orchestrate El Chapo’s daring escape from Mexico’s high-security Altiplano prison in 2015. On February 23, 2021, Emma was arrested in Virginia on suspicion of drug trafficking.

In 2007, Emma Coronel won the beauty pageant at the Coffee and Guava Festival in Canelas, Durango. Although she was an undeniable beauty, the legitimacy of her crown was questioned because she won the title only after hundreds of gunmen descended on the town on motorcycles and after “El Chapo” himself descended on the town to throw a lavish party announcing his intention to marry Emma.

She plans to appear in federal court in Washington, D.C., via videoconference, the U.S. Department of Justice revealed. In addition to the drug trafficking charges, she is accused of conspiring to help her husband escape from Mexico’s maximum-security Altiplano prison in 2015. In January 2016, Chapo was arrested again in Mexico, and in 2019 he was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison at a trial in New York.
