A cat in Vermont gets an honors degree — without even taking a lecture from a spinning professor.

Vermont State University has revealed ahead of its May 18 commencement at its Castleton campus that a cat named Max will be one of this year’s honorary degree recipients.

“Max the cat has been a gentle member of the Castleton family for years,” the college wrote in a Facebook post full of feline quips.

“With an audible purr of approval from the faculty, the Vermont State Cat-leges Board of Trustees awarded Max Dow the prestigious title of Doctor of Litter-ature along with all the perks of catnip, scratching privileges and a litter box. responsibilities,” the publication continued.

“Although his adventures may have slowed down, Max exemplifies the #CastletonWay and we are honored to have him as a member of VTSU,” the post concluded. “Congratulations, Dr. Max Dow!”

Max’s owner Ashley Dow told local news station WCAX that Max is an “emotional support animal” for students and faculty.

“He likes to carry it in backpacks,” Dow said. “The students picked him up and he crawled on their backs.”

Dow also explained that Max gets confused at the end of the school year when there are no students to pick him up.

“They’ll go looking and then come back, a little disappointed, a little sad, and they’ll hang around the house more,” Dow said.

She added that when the students return in the fall, Maxa “will be missing for three days and we’ll have to look for him, and he’s up there on campus waiting for his people.”
