How to Get Cast on Love Is Blind: A Comprehensive Guide to Joining the Pods

Emmy Nominated Netflix the show, which was the most-watched series on any streaming platform in March 2024, has been hosted by husband-and-wife duo Nick Lachey and Vanessa Lachey since its premiere in February 2020. The experimental dating show features a cast of nearly 30 singles who explore emotional connections before physical ones. They sit in an enclosed room, also known as the floor, and go on dates with fellow contestants on the other side of the wall. The catch: they have to decide to get engaged before they meet face to face.

After their proposal and revelation, couples move out of the pods into the real world, where they test their relationships by moving in together before saying “I do” or “no” down the aisle in front of friends, family and millions of viewers.

So how do you become one of these lucky singles? Donna Driscoll, Vice President of Casting at Kinetic Content, tells PEOPLE that with thousands of applications coming in each year, aspiring contestants need to demonstrate authenticity, self-awareness and confidence to stand out.

“Don’t be afraid to be a unique voice when filling out your application,” says Driscoll. “We’re looking for people who are ready to tell their story, are comfortable with who they are, and understand what they bring to the table when it comes to finding a forever partner.”

Contestants must be at least 18 years of age and a resident of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, or Ireland. When cities are chosen for each season, the casting team wants people within 50 miles of the chosen location. However, there are exceptions for regional casts, such as the Seattle group in Season 4 and the upcoming New England cast (which is in the process of casting as of summer 2024).

Driscoll says they’re working together to find “people who are there with the right intentions.”

Influencers, aspiring actors and individuals who have appeared or applied to multiple reality shows are not eligible.

The first step to the competitor at Love is blind is to sign up on the show’s website. There is a written application with almost 40 basic personal and in-depth short questions ranging from: “Why are you single?” on “Who are your relationship role models?” to “What do you think you bring to the table as a potential strong partner?”

“We’re really trying to get a good sense of where their head is when they find their way to the check-in point, and a lot of questions will help us figure that out,” Driscoll says.

Applicants can also submit a 60-second video to Netflix website to further demonstrate their passion for the experience. According to the site, the video can be made as a selfie video, but should be shot vertically in portrait mode and include your name, age and where you’re from.

The portal allows you to provide information about your social media, such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, which the casting team can review to better understand who you are.

After submitting an online application, the casting team will review your complete application and decide whether to select you for the interview process, which begins with a phone call.

After that, between 400-600+ applicants will move on to a video call portion consisting of one or more Zoom calls with the casting team.

Driscoll says the casting director’s team might also reach out to the candidate’s friends and family to get an idea of ​​how serious they are about the opportunity. After the team selects the semi-finalists, there is a compatibility questionnaire to help them narrow down the finalists.

The team then presents the finalists to their partners at Netflix, where it becomes a collaborative experience to narrow down the team to 30 people ready to enter the capsules. Finalists also undergo a psychological assessment and background check before being selected for entry into the groups.

According to Driscoll, thousands of people sign up to participate each year love is blind and only about 30 contestants — 15 men and 15 women — make it to the pod each season. The good news: the casting team reads every application submitted.

“It takes a lot of guts and courage to apply yourself, and that in itself will eliminate people who may feel like it’s not their path,” Driscoll says.

While it can be a long process, Driscoll says they try to support candidates throughout the selection process. For example, Season 4 alum Chelsea Griffin started working for Kinetic’s casting team in 2023 to bridge the gap between production and candidates.

“There are periods and gaps and gray areas where you might not hear from someone or you think, ‘Am I doing the right thing in this process?’ ” Griffin told PEOPLE in August 2023. “I think my hope is to kind of step up and tell people to, ‘Keep your head in the game and stay focused and stay positive and focus on yourself and your life and the things that are going for you. .’ ”

Driscoll shared a few key elements the casting team looks for in candidates, such as comfort in themselves and “a good sense of what they bring to the relationship and what they’re looking for in a lifelong partner.”

The casting team is especially intrigued by candidates who seem to have everything going well in their lives: a solid career, a great relationship with their family, a support system of friends and an active, rich social life.

If they sense that maybe all that person is missing is that last bit of love, the team “gets excited to help them find that last bit … a lifelong partner,” says Driscoll.

Above all, they favor the marriage-minded, as the show aims to take contestants from blind dates to the altar within seven weeks. Regardless of whether contestants go with a spouse or not, Driscoll says the experience is life-changing for all contestants.

“For those who don’t find someone in the capsules, they often learn so much about themselves that they find love not long after,” says Driscoll.

According to Driscoll, the more credible you are in your application, the better your chances.

“Be yourself and lead with it,” she says — which is exactly what Griffin did before landing her spot on the Season 4 cast and meeting her husband, Kwame Appiah.

While speaking with PEOPLE in August 2023, she reflected on the poem “Cringey as Heck” that she read aloud during her video submission.

“I remember saying, ‘I don’t know … what they’re even going to think about this. But I’m not going to think too much,'” Griffin told PEOPLE in August 2023. “And I feel like they kind of met me or just saw me. It was a funny or funny moment. I mean, you really want to stand out in some way.”

When filling out the application, Driscoll advises to “take your time” and “try to tell your story and explain what makes you unique.”

“Explain why all of your past experiences have brought you to a space that makes you excited about the opportunity to find love in such an unorthodox way,” says Driscoll.

While the vetting process can be time-consuming, according to Driscoll, “investing in the application work” and “attending phone and Zoom interviews” will increase your chances of being selected.
