Jack Black is known for his comedic skills, but the funny man is also a family man.

The Movie Super Mario Bros the star is the proud father of two boys. Black and his wife Tanya Haden became parents shortly after they married in 2006. The couple eloped in March and welcomed their first child, son Sammy, in June. Two years later, their second son, Tommy, was born.

“My children are magical creatures and I love them to death,” said the father of two Guard 2011. “But it’s challenging. It takes a lot of energy.”

Although Black likes to crack jokes, he takes fatherhood very seriously. “What surprised me was how much I care,” the comedian told PEOPLE in 2023, describing the parenting role as “a statement that they want nothing but the best for them their whole lives.”

“You spend so much time and energy just thinking about it,” he shared of his sons’ happiness. “It’s harder than you think when you’re just starting out. Because you always ask yourself, ‘Am I doing this right? I don’t know if I’m doing the right thing as a parent.’ But you do the best you can and hope for the best.”

Over the years, Black has brought his boys to plenty of A-list events — including movie premieres, his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony and Easter celebrations with Angelina Jolie and her family. However, the boys are not always impressed. “They’re teenagers,” Black told PEOPLE in 2023. “They want to get as far away from me as possible.”

Three months after their escape, Black and Haden welcomed their first son, Samuel Jason Black – affectionately called “Sammy” by his father – on June 10, 2006.

Sammy did collaborate with his father on the film side of things though. In 2016, he had a small role in Kung Fu Panda 3, voicing one of the bunnies in the animated film. A few years later, Black brought Sammy and his brother Tommy to a movie premiere Jumanji: The Next Level.

After that, Sammy decided to give honest feedback about the film. On Living with Kelly and Ryan In 2019, Black explained that his older son enjoyed writing movie reviews on Instagram and decided to do one for Jumanji.

“He gave it a nice review and it’s the best review I could have hoped for,” he said, adding that Sammy gave the film an 8.5. “I don’t really care about any reviews other than this one, so I found it very moving.”

On May 23, 2008, Black and Haden welcomed their second son, Thomas David Black. “Tommy” was named after his father, who has the same last name.

At the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, Black revealed that Haden received a noteworthy gift during her second pregnancy from none other than Jolie, who was expecting twins at the same time, per Today.

“My wife, Tanya, said, ‘This is the most amazing maternity dress I’ve ever seen,'” Black said. Access to Hollywood with Jolie. “And then, what do we get in the mail next week? That dress. You sent it. It was one of the sweetest gifts ever.”

“I love my boys, but there’s a little part of me that wants to have another one, a girl,” he said. “Legend has it that girls love their daddies more than boys love their daddies,” he joked, adding, “It definitely seems like [my sons] got more love for mom.”

“I bother them,” he continued, explaining that his sons are often uncomfortable, especially when he starts singing in public.

Awkwardness aside, both Tommy and his older brother share a passion for music, just like their father. “I don’t know if my kids are going to follow in my footsteps,” rocker Tenacious D said Guard 2011. “But they like to sing and dance, they like to show off.”

In addition to performing arts, Black also said his younger son loves martial arts. “He literally jumps out and surprises me,” he continued The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in 2015. “I have to be alert all the time,” he added before showing Fallon a photo of Tommy in a ninja pose.

As for acting, Black said Parents 2023 that none of his children are too keen on the idea of ​​appearing in films like their father. “They are interested in creativity in terms of music, direction and filmmaking,” he said. “I will not push them in any particular direction.
