Jennifer Garner’s Kids Gave Her Advice Before Playing a Teen in Family Switch: ‘Mom, You’re Crazy’ (Exclusive)

Jennifer Garner didn’t have to go far when researching her role in the latest hr movie, Family switch.

Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Wednesday, the 51-year-old actress admitted she couldn’t help but ask her three children “a bunch of questions” before preparing to play a teenager in the Netflix comedy.

“You turn up the volume so much because everything is so over the top,” says Garner, who shares daughters Violet Anne, 17, and Seraphina Rose, 13, as well as son Samuel Garner, 11. 51, with ex-husband Ben Affleck. “But yes, I definitely left into his teens and asked a bunch of questions. Everyone said, ‘Mom, you’re crazy.’ ”

IN Family switchGarner is part of a family that, after a chance encounter with an astrology reader (Rita Moreno), wakes up to realize they’ve all switched bodies.

Garner plays a mom who suddenly finds herself in the body of her teenage daughter (WednesdayEmma Myers), while her husband (OfficeEd Helms) and her son (Brady Noon, from Good guys fame) have changed bodies. Even her little son (actors Theodore and Lincoln Sykes) and her dog got caught up in the fun.

Things are much less hectic off-screen for Garner at home. Asked about the chaos of life as a mother of three, Garner tells PEOPLE, “My kids are funny and smart, and they work really hard. And their teenage antics are at rock bottom, G-rated, so I’m fine with it.”

But despite her children’s humor, intelligence and work ethic, the mother of three wouldn’t want to change with them.

“You know what? I think my kids work so hard and have so much pressure on them that I couldn’t even imagine as a teenager,” Garner told PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “I’ll stay here in my old lady’s body, thank you very much.”

The star’s eldest child, Violet, is also set to start college soon. In a conversation with LJUDI at the premiere of the film family switch, Garner explains that while she’s “not really set,” sometimes “there are moments where it hits me.”

“But for now I’m just excited for her,” she adds.

On Tuesday, Garner appeared on Live with Kelly & Mark where she opened up about Violet’s college tour. While 13 Continues 30 star admitted that she could “see the stress”, also stating that her daughter is “handling it like a champ and is totally in charge”.

“I am. I’m going to be an adult soon,” Garner snapped. “Three days. Three days before my oldest turns 18. Can you believe that?”

Family switch begins streaming on Netflix on December 30.
