Jenny Slate Details Her Embarrassing, Butt-Baring Wardrobe Malfunction at the 2023 Oscars

“I would say he was semi-crack,” the ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’ star told Jimmy Kimmel

Jenny Slate gets candid about her Oscars 2023 wardrobe.

During her appearance on Tuesday’s episode Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the 41-year-old actress recounted the incident that happened during last year’s award ceremony. Slate revealed that shortly after arriving at the event, her dress (which had been sewn in) unexpectedly split.

“It was like, bah bah bah bah,” she humorously described to Kimmel, 56, recalling the moment. “And guess what was exposed? My ass.”

“I’d say it was half cracked,” she continued, playfully noting the extent of the closet’s malfunction.

Coincidentally, as it happened, Slate shared that the Academy was announcing the award for Best Animated Feature, the category for which her film Marcel shell in shoes was nominated. After learning she didn’t win, she admitted she was relieved to know she wouldn’t have to go on stage in her compromised outfit.

Recounting the immediate aftermath, Slate told Kimmel, “My husband’s sitting next to me, and I’m like, ‘My ass is out.’ He’s like, ‘Should we go?’ And I say: ‘I don’t know, let’s just go for a drink.’ So let’s go for a drink, come back, and our places were taken by a crew of Belgian filmmakers.”

Having run out of seats, they moved to another place, ironically, more visible to the camera. “I’m like, ‘I should go. Let’s get out of here, man. My ass is out and I lost, which is fine,'” she continued. Despite the accident, Slate realized that she was experiencing the peak of her career, participating in two significant films.

Despite initial embarrassment, Slate’s spirits lifted when her second film, Everything everywhere and at once, won best picture. She described making her way onto the stage, carefully gathering her dress to join her colleagues in celebration.

“I was like, ‘I’m here, I’m back, thank you very much.’ And then, while I was waddling around holding my ass shut, I saw you,” she said, addressing Kimmel, who was present at the event but was unaware of his predicament.

“I never know when people’s asses are off,” Kimmel quipped. – That’s one of my things.

Earlier in the interview, Slate shared that the dress situation wasn’t the only thing that went wrong that night. It turns out that the driver originally took her to the Hollywood Bowl instead of the Dolby Theater when she was leaving for the event after getting her dress sewn.

She added that she rode in a sprinter van on the way so as not to wrinkle her dress.

“They say, ‘You’ll get there in 17 minutes. This is a tough ordeal, but it’s going to be okay,'” she recalled. “But then a bunch of time goes by and I obviously have no idea what’s going on. I think, ‘This feels longer than 17 minutes.’ ”

She continued, “But we’re appearing at the Hollywood Bowl. I don’t know that’s just not where the Oscars are held.”
