Julie Bowen Says Sofia Vergara Is ‘Doing Great’ and Surrounded by ‘Wonderful Family’ amid Split from Joe Manganiello (Exclusive)

Sofia Vergara will forever have a friend in Julie Bowen.

Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the Step Up Inspiration Awards on Friday, Bowen, 53, says that Modern family The costar, 51, will “always” have her support in the new phase of his life following his split from Joe Manganiello.

“Her Instagram says it all,” says Bowen. “We talked and she is great. Sofia has always had such a wonderful family surrounding her and wonderful friends.”

“She doesn’t need Taylor Swift to take her to the game. She’s good,” jokes Bowen. “But I’m so happy all these other girls are going to the games with T Swifty. I wish she was with me.”

Bowen and Vergara shared the screen for eleven years on the beloved ABC series Modern family. Although the series ended in 2020 after 11 seasons, Bowen praised their friendship to PEOPLE and said Vergara is someone he considers a “role model.”

“Sofía has always been a role model for me in terms of embracing being a woman and being feminine and yet being powerful and not… I’ve always felt like you have to compromise for each other,” she explains to PEOPLE.

Bowen previously expressed her support for Vergara following her split from Manganiella, 46, in a carousel Instagram post that included photos of Vergara in a blue and black leopard-print one-piece thong. As Vergara captioned the post, “Last days of vacation! Even when you’re so hot, I love you Ravello!!!😁😁,” Bowen left a comment that read, “This is what single and 🔥 looks like!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️.”

UE! In an interview with the newspaper in August, Bowen said that everything Vergara does “she does with grace.”

“And she rises above and just keeps going. She’s warm and generous and giving to everyone around her,” Bowen continued. “I have no doubt that if she wants to be in a relationship, she will be, but she certainly doesn’t need her.”

Sources confirmed to PEOPLE that Vergara and Manganiello went their separate ways after seven years of marriage shortly after Vergara was spotted celebrating her 51st birthday with friends in Italy. During the trip, Manganiello was not seen with Vergara, who was spotted without her wedding ring.

They announced their split in a statement to Page Six that read: “We have made the difficult decision to divorce. As two people who love and care for each other very much, we kindly ask that you respect our privacy at this time as we move through this new phase of our lives.”

Two days after publication, Real blood alum officially filed for divorce from Vergara. He cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the couple’s split, according to divorce documents obtained by PEOPLE.

Shortly after the news broke, an insider shared with PEOPLE that Vergara and Manganiello are “extremely different in style and what they like to do, although throughout their marriage they’ve each tried to put the other’s interests ahead of their own to make it work.”

“Their mutual physical attraction has brought their marriage this far,” they added. “Every day there are so many other things that have to work. There were a few things that didn’t work.”
