News about Katie Cotton

During and after the Steve Jobs era, Katie Cotton, Apple Inc.’s longtime director of communications, protected the company’s distinctive brand.

In an online obituary, Cotton’s relatives said she “passed away peacefully” on April 6. Cotton was born in 1965. She has passed away, Apple said in a statement Monday.

“We are deeply saddened by Katie’s passing,” the company said. She was an exceptional person who made many contributions during her two decades at Apple. All those who had the opportunity to work with her and those close to her are in our thoughts.

Cotton was named Apple’s vice president of communications in 1996, a position she held until her retirement in 2014, during which time she helped plan the company’s innovative initiatives and develop its media strategy. She was the behind-the-scenes champion of the Apple brand and is known for protecting Jobs as his health deteriorated.

Tim Cook, Jobs’ replacement as CEO, was about two years into his career when Cotton left the company. During his tenure at the company, Apple made one of the most incredible comebacks in the history of technology, rising from the brink of bankruptcy to become the world’s most valuable corporation. Jim Wells, his partner and his two children survived her.
