Lily-Rose Depp still loves Idol despite the reaction to the controversial series.
The Nosferatu star, 25, said Vanity Fair that she has no regrets about starring opposite Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye in the HBO series, which was canceled in August 2023 after one season.
“I like it. Honestly, I love it,” she said of the series, which followed a rising pop star (Depp) who falls into a complicated relationship with a self-help guru and nightclub owner (The Weeknd).
“You make something and you hope people like it and you hope it resonates with people,” she continued. “But we always knew that some people wouldn’t like it and some people would find it too much. But I stand by it. We made up our minds and went for it.”

Depp explained that she enjoys interacting with fans who have enjoyed the series, which she co-created EuphoriaI’m Sam Levinson.
“I love it when people come up to me and say, ‘I love it.’ Idol.‘ And I say, ‘Thank you. You understand!’ It’s okay that it’s not for everyone,” she explains. “That’s the nice thing about it. I’m very close to Sam and Ashley [Levinson]. They are like family to me. I am excited to be able to work with them again one day.”
The actress reflected on the personal growth she experienced while filming the series, saying: “I loved the experience of filming – it was a huge turning point for me. I learned so much about myself and had to grow so much in my own business. I learned to dance, sing and do all these things that I had never done before. It was a real growing up period for me. So I look back on it and I can only think fondly, and I’m really proud of what it is.”

The Weeknd says he’s ‘grateful’ for ‘messy’ journey on ‘Idol’ despite criticism
The series made headlines for its overtly explicit scenes of sex and nudity. Idol — which was the subject of a Rolling Stone exposé — was also criticized for its stories, with The Guardian calling it “one of the worst programs ever made”.
Depp said Vanity Fair it was “hard to escape” the backlash, saying: “Obviously, it was a big topic of conversation – but I was always ready for it.”
“We knew what we were doing, deliberately touching on things that were meant to be shocking, crazy and out of our own world,” she added. “So when people said, ‘This is so crazy,’ we said, ‘Ha ha ha. That’s super crazy.’”
However, Depp stated that she does not take the criticism personally.
“I like to do things that maybe not everyone is down to,” she said. “No matter what the project is, you go there and try to give your heart and your best and everything, and then it goes and gets edited, and you have nothing to do with it, and then it gets accepted in the world. , and you also have nothing to do with it. And also, I’m not such an internet rat. I’m not on Twitter. I don’t read things.”

Despite the backlash, the actress would love to return for another season, explaining: “I mean, I’d love to work with Sam again. And I really loved that character.”
“She is the woman I wanted to be when I was five,” she added. “I was a little girl wearing my mom’s heels – she’s the femme fatale fantasy of what I wanted to be when I was a kid. So I would like to explore that character further. But I know one day we’ll do something together again and I’m excited for that day. Everything happens for a reason.”
Depp previously defended the series at a Cannes Film Festival press conference in May 2023, as she explained: “I think something about Jocelyn is just that she’s a born and bred actress. I think that extends to every aspect of her life, no just her professional life.”
