Lizzo Shares 'Dark Cloud' of Depression Struggle: 'You Don’t Know You’re in It Until You’re Out of It'

Lizzo says she’s the happiest she’s been in a year after coming out of depression.

The singer (36) announced on Instagram on Wednesday that “I am the happiest I have been in the last 10 months.”

The “About Damn Time” singer continued: “The weird thing about depression is you don’t know you’re in it until you pull it out. I’m definitely not as carefree as I used to be.. But the dark cloud that followed me every day is finally dissipating.”

Since last August, the singer has been embroiled in a legal battle with her former backup dancers, who filed a lawsuit against Lizzo (real name: Melissa Jefferson) for sexual and racial harassment, as well as allegedly creating a hostile work environment.

The singer denied the accusations a long statement on social networks at the time, writing, “My work ethic, morals and respect have been called into question. My character was criticized. I usually choose not to respond to false accusations, but as incredible as they may sound… they are too outrageous not to deal with.”

Lizzo’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit was denied in February. A month later, she shared a statement that she was “tired of putting up with everyone pulling her down in my life and on the internet.”

“All I want to do is make music and make people happy and help make the world a little better than how I found it,” the Grammy winner continued. “But I’m starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it. I’m constantly pushing back against the lies being told about me because of my influence and looks… I’m the subject of jokes every time because of how I look.”

Lizzo added that her character was “torn apart by people who don’t know me and [are] disrespecting my name.”

She signed off, writing “I quit” – which many took to mean she was quitting social media.

However, in April, the “Truth Hurts” singer returned to clarify, “when I say I quit, I mean I stopped paying any attention to the negative energy.”

She continued, saying, “What I’m not going to give up is the joy of my life, which is making music, which is connecting with people because I know I’m not alone. I’m not in any way shape or form the only person who experiences that negative voice that seems louder than the positive.”

And now, the singer says she’s experiencing positivity again, writing: “A smile reaches my eyes again and it’s a victory. I thought my album was done.. but I need to release some of these good vibes quick.”

Her latest album, special, is out in 2022 — but in January she shared a video of herself performing in the studio, teasing that she’s working on new music, writing, “the magic is back.”

Lizzo ended her latest post with a message to her fans, writing: “Thanks for your patience ❤️”
