Love Is Blind’s Amy Shares How Husband Johnny Supported Her Through Health Scare When She Felt ‘Broken’ (Exclusive)

  • Johnny McIntyre and Amy Cortés met and married in the sixth season of Netflix Love is blind
  • Cortés told PEOPLE that she experienced a stress-related illness around the time her season began airing earlier this year
  • The reality star said she is now in a “much healthier and happier state” thanks to her husband

Johnny McIntyre and Amy Cortés agreed to stay together in sickness and in health when they said “I do” in Love is blindseason 6 finale. But the reality stars did not expect to be tested in this regard so soon in marriage.

Cortés, 28, told PEOPLE at the June 21 Wildly Better Well-Being event celebrating the launch of Roxanne Kaiser’s Proxy Tires in New York City that earlier this year she experienced chest pains that her doctor informed her were inflammation of the sternum and ribs due to stress.

“I remember when I would sneeze, it felt like my whole chest was going to break,” Cortés recalled. “I was like, I don’t know what’s going on with me. Right before the show aired, that’s when it got even more stressful at work. I was very devastated and so it came to the moment when I felt the worst pain at the beginning of the year.”

McIntyre, 28, encouraged Cortés to see a doctor and make herself a priority.

“He would always push me like, ‘You need to put yourself first in a lot of situations,'” she said. “I had a really raw, deep conversation with him where I told him my intrusive thoughts. I remember crying, it was like, ‘I feel like I’m broken. I feel like I married you and I feel like I’m falling to pieces.’”

But McIntyre comforted her. “This is what we signed up for,” he told PEOPLE. “It’s whatever comes up. That’s how we progress.”

The pair decided together that Cortés should step down from his job as a senior e-commerce retail specialist.

“I feel like, especially in corporate America, the statistics of Latinos who have come forward and achieved this is very, very small and I felt like I wanted to continue. I’m such a workaholic,” said Cortés. “I wanted to break that statistic. But my body was telling me it was time for a change.”

Cortés said she sees herself “eventually” returning to corporate America and credited her husband for being “the biggest support system” during that transition. “I’m in a much healthier and happier state now and I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for him,” she said. “I feel like he held me accountable while adjusting to what I needed and giving me grace and being that support system. I am very grateful.”

McIntyre said he and Cortés have begun to engage in “conversations that are more meaningful” since overcoming her health scare together.

“We always joked in teams and when we were filming that we were going to apply, but maybe a month or two after the show finished airing, we just kind of stopped,” McIntyre revealed. “We kind of just got into a state of, ‘OK, I’ll work in this corner, you work in this corner of the room, sometimes we’ll talk.’ And I feel like since then we’ve been able to step away from that and really focus on ourselves.”

The TV personality said he and Cortés are waiting to do those application interviews until “we’re completely free and we’re off the phones.”

“Johnny was there, listened to me and made sure I felt validated,” Cortés said. “He was going to support me no matter what, in sickness and in health.”

After celebrating their first wedding anniversary in May, Cortés and McIntyre are looking forward to buying their first house in Charlotte, NC (but not “super, super soon,” she said) and traveling more together.

“I really want to go to Asia with him,” Cortés said. “I want to go to Japan or South Korea or both. After experiencing Japan for the first time — it was literally a month after we got married, and I had already planned a trip with my best friend — I always thought, ‘I wish you were here to experience this.'”

Soon, the couple plans to head to Maine for a McIntyre family reunion that includes Olympic-style competition, including synchronized swimming, Danger! and “drunken getaways,” according to McIntyre. “We play silly games and stuff you see on TikTok and it’s just a great time,” he added.

“I am ready,” Cortés said. “I’m so excited!”
