For a brief moment, it seemed as though feminism would prevail. Following days of uproar in Spain and across the globe, media reports claim that Spain’s football manager, Luis Rubiales, will step down due to the scandal surrounding the kiss he planted on forward Jenni Hermoso’s lips during the Women’s World Cup medal presentation on Sunday.
But instead of announcing his resignation at a hurried meeting of the football federation on Friday, he shocked many Spaniards by adamantly repeating “I will not resign” five times in a rambling speech that attacked “false feminism,” tried to portray himself as a victim, and recast the kiss as “a peck.”
The Spanish government gave the federation, which only has six women among its 140 members, instructions to take action right away if Rubiales did not follow through on its prior pledge to take action against him.
On social media, Yolanda Daz, the second deputy prime minister and acting labor minister of Spain, said, “What we saw today at the federation’s assembly is unacceptable.” The government needs to act right away because chauvinistic attitudes won’t be accepted anymore. Rubiales cannot continue in the position.
Some of the high-ranking federation officials who represented the group in various parts of the country, including Rafael del Amo, the manager of women’s football, reportedly announced their resignations late on Friday.
However, Rubiales’ prior criticism of feminism received ecstatic applause from both Jorge Vilda, head coach of the Spanish women’s national team, and Luis de la Fuente, head coach of the Spanish men’s national team.
While the news outlets were writing stories about Rubiales’ departure, the 46-year-old had other ideas. He vowed to “fight this to the end” in front of the federation’s members, who applauded his audacity with thunderous cheers and standing ovations.
He apologized profusely for the “unfortunate gesture” of gripping his crotch during La Roja’s World Cup win, but he emphasized that the kiss that threatened to overshadow the team’s achievements had been consented to.
The kiss was offered on stage during the post-match ceremony, and Hermoso said she “didn’t like it” shortly after it.
