New Amsterdam Sequel Set 30 Years After the Original Series in the Works at NBC

The doors of the New Amsterdam Hospital will be open again!

New Amsterdam showrunner, executive producer and creator David Schulner is developing a spinoff series based on the beloved NBC series, Deadline reports.

Series — provisionally named New Amsterdam: Tomorrow — takes place 30 years after the original, with Dr. Max Goodwin’s (Ryan Eggold) daughter, Luna Goodwin, set to take over as medical director of New Amsterdam Hospital, according to the outlet.

It’s been nearly 14 months since fans unknowingly saw the schedule for the new spinoff set in the series finale when Molly Griggs played the grown-up version of Luna.

In the episode’s final moments, a grown-up Luna addresses the hospital staff as the new medical director and talks about how her father inspired her to become a doctor.

“I wanted to start by asking you the same thing my father asked his staff every hour of every single day: How can I help?” she added later.

While it’s unclear whether Griggs or Eggold will appear in the new series, Deadline reports that fans can expect the show to “explore the ways artificial intelligence could help advance the medical industry in the future.”

NBC confirmed it New Amsterdam will end after five seasons in March 2022. The news came as a shock to many fans as the show received a three-season renewal in January 2020. At the time, the show was in the middle of its second season and NBC estimated that it averaged nearly 10 million viewers .

New Amsterdam’s Tyler Labine opens up about his decades-long battle with an eating disorder

In addition to Eggold, the original series starred Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Freema Agyeman, Tyler Labine and Anupam Kher.

“When I first read the pilot script for New Amsterdam, I knew we had a winner. We cheered Max’s disruption of the status quo and applauded when he asked his patients a simple but profound question: ‘How can I help?'” Erin Underhill, president of Universal Television, said in a statement following the announcement.

“Over the past four seasons, David, Peter and our incredible cast have tackled important, thought-provoking stories that touched on the human condition, but also made us laugh and give us hope. We’re so proud of this series and owe it to everyone involved in bringing New Amsterdam in life. Well done,” the press release said.

After the series finale, the show’s Instagram posted a message to fans, “Thanks #DamFam, hope we could help. ❤️ All 5 seasons of #NewAmsterdam now airing on @peacocktv.”
