The hills are alive The sound of music again!
Almost 60 years after the beloved musical was first shown in cinemas, a new super-deluxe edition of the film’s soundtrack is being released later this year.
Craft Recordings not only remixed and remastered the original 16-track collection, but added more than 40 previously unreleased tracks. Also included are 11 previously unheard alternate takes of the cast, led by Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.
The box set — to be released on December 1 — contains four CDs, as well as a companion Blu-Ray Audio disc featuring the film’s full high-definition score and a new Dolby Atmos mix of the original soundtrack.

The set also includes new, detailed notes from director Robert Wise, Mike Matessin, who remastered the soundtrack from the original multi-track tapes. Matessino also wrote a lengthy essay for fans, vividly recounting the making of the film and its timeless music.
“You’ll hear what you’ve heard before — the familiar tunes of lead singer Dame Julie Andrews — but the experience has been transformed beyond what the 1965 soundtrack album offered with song extensions, brilliantly arranged underlining and even some segments that were not used in the finished version of the film,” Matessino explained in the essay.

The album will also be available in deluxe two-CD and three-LP triple-gatefold formats featuring the full soundtrack of the film. Along with the wide vinyl release, a special “Picnic Meadow Green” color pressing – limited to just 500 worldwide – will be sold exclusively online at CraftRecordings.com.
The original 16-track album from 1965 will also be re-released on standard digital, HD digital and Dolby Atmos, along with several international versions on standard digital.

More than 40 unreleased tracks on the super-deluxe album include “The Little Dears,” which combines “I Have Confidence” and “My Favorite Things”; “The New Governess”; and “Arbor”, an extended part of the underline.

Julie Andrews remained ‘great friends’ with ‘Sound of Music’ Christopher Plummer until his death
As The sound of music approaches its milestone 60th anniversary in 2025, members of the film’s crew enjoyed a touching reunion last year. Five actors who played the Von Trapp children joined Andrews, 87, on stage at the AFI Lifetime Achievement Awards in June 2022.
Nicholas Hammond, Duane Chase, Angela Cartwright, Debbie Turner and Kym Karath surprised their acting governess on stage, honored by her peers. Andrews later reflected on the emotional moment, saying Today she and her co-stars remain connected all these years later.
“We stay in touch, but not very regularly,” she said during an appearance on the NBC morning show. “I mean, Christmases, maybe birthdays and definitely get-togethers, but we’ve just become so close that I think we’re family after all.”
She also spoke about her The sound of music leading man, Plummer, who died in February 2021 at the age of 91.
“I loved it [him]” Andrews said. “We’ve been friends for years.”
