Nick Lachey Recalls Thinking 'Do I Have to Really Announce This' Before 'Cringeworthy' Perfect Match Challenges (Exclusive)

Nick Lachey knows there were some awkward moments A perfect match season 2

As the popular Netflix dating show approaches its second season finale on Friday, June 21, Lachey looks back on this season and admits that the compatibility challenges were definitely uncomfortable to watch as showrunner.

The challenges, which ran throughout the season, involved couples taking part in physical activities aimed at determining their compatibility level. Some of them were more about emotional connections, like how well they know each other, while others were a bit more physical and required the show’s participants to kiss, dry and take pictures of each other.

“Sometimes it’s cringe-worthy, there’s no doubt about it,” Lachey, 50, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “That’s what makes good TV.”

The cast of ‘Perfect Match’ Season 2 competes in a challenge where they had to hit each other to move a box across a lake.

Perhaps the biggest “creepy” moment happened in episode 2 when all the couples had to participate in a kissing challenge. The cast were blindfolded and wearing noise-canceling headphones as they each kissed one by one and were judged on the kiss afterwards. Only one cast member, Xanthi Perdikomatis, chose not to take part in the challenge.

“That compatibility, that chemistry, it’s there for some and it’s certainly not there for others, and we can all see it play out,” explains Lachey. “So, I can safely say that the kissing challenge is probably not the contestants’ favorite challenge, but I have to guess it’s probably one of the more fun challenges for our audience.”

“But … it’s telling, and I think there’s real value in that because physical chemistry is a big part of any relationship, and that’s certainly reflected in the kissing challenge,” he adds. “But yeah, there are moments where it’s like, ‘Oh my God, do I really have to post this now?'”

Even with the awkward moments of hosting, Lachey says he is not phased.

“It’s all kind of fun and part of the experience… I’ve done two seasons of this show, and both casts have been absolutely amazing to work with and get to know them as people, and an absolute joy all around. So, on my part there are no complaints,” he says.

2nd season A perfect match it’s been quite the roller coaster, with some shocking moments unfolding so far. Ahead of the final itself, long-term couple Jessica Vestal and Harry Jowsey were nervous after he admitted to behaving inappropriately with co-star Melinda Melrose. Fans will find out if Jess decides to give Harry another chance or end things for good in the finale.

With the show’s second season ahead and fans eagerly anticipating the second season finale, Lachey says he hopes there will be more A perfect match — and more compatible duets for fans to watch — in the future.

“If we find the right connections here, if someone can create a long-term relationship out of this, then great. We’re looking for chemistry – certainly physical chemistry, emotional chemistry,” he says. “But I think the cornerstone of this series and what’s really been the mainstay of these two seasons is just a lot of fun.”

“And that starts with a great cast that comes in willing to have a good time and willing to do their best and invest in themselves,” he continues.

“I can only hope that there will be more of the same, that people will come ready for it… I think that’s when the best television happens, that’s when the best results in relationships happen. That’s when the best happens in all segments when you’re ready to make an effort and just do it,” he adds. “So I’ve been very fortunate to host two seasons of this show, and hopefully many more. But it’s been a lot of fun and it’s all about the cast, honestly. They’ve been great for two seasons now and we hope it continues.”
