Noah has kept his relationship with his twin mostly private for years — several followers even expressed shock that he’s a twin in the comments of his Instagram post. However, he was honest about the role Chloe played in his dating.
In an interview with Diversity in August he revealed that she was the first person he had told that he was gay. “I can’t tell anyone else before I tell my own twin sister – she’s going to kill me,” he said.
The very act of discovery—even to his twin—proved terrifying.
“I was driving and I was just putting it off. Our house was just down the road, and she said, ‘Why do you keep taking wrong turns?’ I was like, ‘I can’t do it, I can’t do it.’ Then we got home and I said, ‘Fuck him,'” he said.

Chloe’s reaction was more than supportive. Noah said she was “ecstatic” at the news.
“She said she would hate the idea of me marrying another girl and having to compete with that girl for my attention. The fact that it’s going to be a man now, she said, ‘Oh, he’s going to be my best friend.'”

What prompted him to come out, the actor said, was his mix Stranger Things the character’s influence and the beginning of his college experience.
Realizing he was gay after starting school at Penn last year, he recalled, “All these new girls started hitting on me, and I was like, ‘I don’t like this. I don’t want this,’ he says. “I thought, ‘Holy shit.’ Now I know.'”

The release of Season 4 of the Netflix series was another push for Noah to come out, as the sexuality of his character, Will Byers, was made clear for the first time.
“Once I fully accepted that Will was gay, it was just an exponential speed towards accepting that for myself,” he told the news outlet. “I would be in a very different place if I didn’t have a Will to show, embrace and help me accept myself.”
He added: “I don’t think I’d ever played that character, I’d probably still be locked up.”
