There is one particular Lorde song that is in Olivia Rodrigo’s blood.
In a new round table interview with The Hollywood Reporter with several of this year’s featured songwriters, Rodrigo opened up about how the “trajectory” of her life changed after hearing Lorde’s 2013 hit, “Royals.”
“I remember getting my first phone when I was about 12 or 13, and the first thing I did was download Lorde, Pure heroin“, said the 20-year-old performer of the series “Vampir” in an interview published as part of the series Off script with the Hollywood Reporter.

“I love that record so much,” Rodrigo continued. “I remember listening to her when I was just starting to write songs and I was just blown away by her lyrics talking about, you know, being a teenager, living in the suburbs.”
The Grammy winner recalled feeling like Lorde, who was 16 at the time of the album’s release in September 2013, “made being young and doing these seemingly insignificant things so sacred and beautiful” through her songwriting.
“That album is one of my favorites, and she still inspires me a lot to this day,” Rodrigo added, before elaborating on his love for “Royals.”

Released ahead of the album as its first single in June 2013, the song featured a commentary on the tendency of popular musicians to sing about lavish lifestyles that are not for many listeners.
“We’ll never be royalty / It’s not in our blood / That kind of luxury just ain’t for us / We crave different music,” sings Lorde, 27, on the electro-pop song that reached No. 1 on Board Hot 100 and won two Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2014 ceremony.

“I remember hearing that song on the radio for the first time,” Rodrigo recalled. “It was one of those pinch-me moments when you always remember — the memory of moments. Like, ‘Oh my God. What is this?’ It changes the trajectory of your life.”
