Oppenheimer Headed Back to IMAX Theaters for Limited-Time After Breaking Records at Box Office

Oppenheimer lights the big screen again.

IMAX has announced that the Christopher Nolan film will return to IMAX screens next week after grossing over $900 million at the worldwide box office.

The film will resume a limited IMAX run on Friday, November 3 at IMAX locations worldwide, including six of its 70mm screen locations in Hollywood, San Francisco, Irvine, California, New York, the UK and Australia.

The company said the World War II biopic about theoretical physicist and Manhattan Project scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer earned more than $183 million from IMAX screenings, making the film its “fourth highest-grossing IMAX release of all time.” It also said the film helped the company achieve its “highest-grossing summer in 54 countries,” which includes the US and China.

The huge success of Nolan’s film is due in part to the fan-coined “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, which was born on July 21 when Oppenheimer and Barbie released on the same day. The two films fueled the best single weekend at the box office this year, according to Box Office Mojo.

Helmet with Greta Gerwig Barbie it previously received its own one-week limited re-release in IMAX theaters beginning September 22 after surpassing $1 billion at the worldwide box office. In a statement, Gerwig, 40, said the audience’s enthusiasm was positive Barbie worldwide since its release in July “it was overwhelming, humbling and deeply moving”.

“We did Barbie for the big screen, so it’s even more exciting to be able to bring it to IMAX, the biggest screen of all,” Gerwig said. “And as a special thank you Barbie fans, we’re excited to share a little more of the incredible work of our cast and crew by adding special new footage that we hope audiences will enjoy.”

Oppenheimer broke its own records, grossing $82.4 million and lifting AMC Theaters — the nation’s largest movie theater chain — to the highest weekly ticket revenue in company history.

Not adjusted for inflation, the film is Nolan’s highest-grossing global release since 2012. The Dark Knight Riseswhich exceeded the global threshold of one billion dollars.

The movie — based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin — stars Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer. The film also has an all-star cast, including Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett and David Krumholtz in critical roles. Other famous actors: Kenneth Branagh, Benny Safdie, Josh Peck and Jack Quaid, among others.
