Welcome to The Blueprint, where we take apart the celebrity looks we want to wear right now and recreate them, piece by piece.
Oprah Winfrey is devoted to cargo pants, so it’s obvious that I need to break up with my boring pants without pockets as soon as possible.
On Sept. 10 in New York, the media mogul wore a pair of pants with big pockets (which she’s worn before) that sparked a lightbulb realization: I’m afraid I didn’t give weight a fighting chance. And for what? Boring pants that only have hidden pockets or, in many cases, faux pants that you can’t even hide your phone in.
Aside from her khakis, Oprah posted a photo of the pair just under a month ago, while Gwyneth Paltrow, who was also in the Big Apple, wore a navy blue pair with a cropped raincoat just the day before.

The rest of Oprah’s look was also magnificent: her purple sweater was similar to Natalie Portman’s, but still more fall-friendly thanks to a few extra inches of fabric on the sleeves, and her comfy sneakers seemed more functional than the high-heeled boots she wore that day.

When I use regular pockets, I’m very careful because they’re usually not deep enough, so things can fall out while I’m sitting. In other words, they are not as secure and that’s why I choose pants with pockets that have more space or more compartments.
These from Amazon are “very durable” and “silky” to the touch, according to reviews. Also, according to one customer who wore them while hiking: “The pockets were big enough to fit my phone and Chapstick, so I didn’t have to carry a big bag.” They also have drawstring cuffs, so you can tie them up if you don’t want to get them dirty when you’re out and about.

I can’t stand feeling like an overstuffed burrito with a thick sweater wrapped in an even thicker coat in the fall or winter. So, I usually go for thinner layers, but I want them to keep me at least a little warm. This turtleneck “looks more like a light sweater than a T-shirt,” according to one customer, and many others have worn it under dresses and jackets.
There’s no exact color match for Oprah’s deep purple, but the three-quarter length sleeves are, in my opinion, the most important thing to focus on here.

Oprah also pulled off a sly move when she switched up her shoes a bit. We don’t know which pair came first—the heels or the sneakers—but I’m personally a go-comfortable-or-go-home kind of shoe girl, so I’m going with option B.
In my book, suede makes everything more fall-worthy, but it can be tricky on shoes. I don’t want to spray protective spray all over the place, so a pair with a bit of a soft texture is easier to handle in the long run. The soles also look serrated like Oprah’s and makes me believe they would be incredibly grippy.
