Outrage as Manchester hotel cancels bookings on Oasis concert dates due to ‘glitch’ then relists them for ‘triple price’

A HOTEL chain has been accused of canceling Manchester bookings to coincide with Oasis concerts and reselling rooms for triple the price.

Greater Manchester nightlife councilor Sacha Lord called on Maldron Hotels to “do the right thing” after receiving a number of complaints.

In a post on social media platform X, he wrote: “Hey @MaldronHotels. I’ve had a few people who booked your hotel for the Oasis concert get in touch to say their rooms have just been canceled and are now available again at three times the price.

“I’m sure this is a ‘computer error’… easy to fix. Do the right thing.”

A number of disgruntled customers have posted screenshots on X of an email that appears to be from the Maldron Hotel, stating that “due to a technical error, you have received a booking confirmation that was not successfully completed”.

Recipients were told they would be sent a “cancellation request” and asked to “accept immediately.”

The company operates two hotels in Manchester.

On Wednesday morning, both had no rooms available since the beginning of July next year.

Oasis are visiting Manchester’s Heaton Park on July 11, 12, 19 and 20.

Oasis fan Mark Slinger, 36, from the Isle of Man, said he had booked a room at the Maldron Hotels in central Manchester for July 20.

He booked £90 after the band announced a reunion tour – but says he won’t accept a cancellation request and doesn’t believe it was a technical error.

Mark told Sky News: “They realized they could cancel and resell at four times the price because of the Oasis show.”

Another fan Lilly Stroud, 26, from Newcastle, has also booked rooms with her mum for two weekends at the hotel during July next year in anticipation of getting tickets to the concert.

After receiving the error email, she called the Maldron Hotel directly and was initially told her booking was still in the system, before later being told it could not be found.

“We kind of expected it,” she told the BBC, adding that she was “frustrated” because “it’s stressful enough when you’re thinking ‘are you going to get tickets'”.

Manchester City councilor Pat Karney told BBC Radio that Manchester Trading Standards staff should investigate.

He said: “If that’s the case then they’ve let themselves down and they’ve let Manchester down.

“We are not silly, we know that the prices will be high, as long as the people in the hotels are honest about it.

“There is no excuse for stealing from people.”

Responding to Lord’s post, Maldron, who operates two hotels in Manchester, said this afternoon: “Due to a technical error in our booking system on August 26 and 27, significantly more rooms were booked than were available for the Oasis concert nights at 11, 12, 19 and 20 July 2025 at Maldron Hotel Manchester City and Maldron Hotel Cathedral Quarter.

HOW LONG CAN IT TAKE?

By Joanna Kavanagh

Noel and Liam’s feud has been going on for 30 years and is one of the most famous in music. Here’s the summary.

September 1994: Noel temporarily quits after Liam throws a tambourine at him.

Summer 1995: While filming (What’s The Story) Morning Glory, Noel allegedly hit Liam over the head with a cricket bat.

August 1996: Liam pulls out of an MTV Unplugged performance, berating his soloing brother from the audience.

May 2000: After Liam questions the legitimacy of Noel’s daughter Anais, he quits again. He returned but did not finish their European tour.

June 2005: At the Heineken Jammin’ Festival in Italy, Liam leaves the stage during Champagne Supernova. Noel told Spin magazine: “He’s actually scared to death of me.”

April 2009: Noel calls Liam “the angriest man you’ll ever meet” in Q mag, adding: “He’s like a man with a fork in the soup world”.

August 2009: Oasis pulls out of the ‘V’ festival at the last minute. Liam reportedly had laryngitis, but Noel claims he’s “hungover”.

Late August 2009: As the band prepares to play in Paris, an argument breaks out and, as we reported, Liam wields Noel’s guitar “like an axe”. The tour was cancelled. Noel declares: “It is with some sadness and great relief that I have to tell you that I have left Oasis.”

June 2017: After the Manchester terror attack, Liam accuses Noel of not turning up to the Old Trafford tribute. Noel’s camp says he was out of the country.

“As a result, we are unable to honor all bookings made on these dates and are actively working with customers regarding their bookings. Hotels are currently not accepting reservations while we investigate the issue.

“This is not an attempt to resell rooms at inflated prices, but an overbooking issue due to a technical error in our reservation systems.

“Additionally, due to the same technical error, a small number of customers were able to reserve rooms at a higher rate later that evening. We will also be unable to honor those reservations.”

Insisting that it will continue to “honour all bookings made before August 26”, it concluded: “We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused.”

Premier Inn, the UK’s largest hotel brand, only has rooms available in Manchester at the city’s airport on Oasis concert nights.

Another major hotel chain, Travelodge, has rooms at its Oldham Chadderton site – five miles from Heaton Park – priced from £190 for those dates.

Rooms at the same hotel on July 26 – a week after the concerts – are available for almost half the price, at £97.

The Sun has contacted Maldron Hotels’ parent company Dalata Hotel Group for comment.
