Parakara Prabhakar is an Indian politician, political economist, political commentator, social worker and television host. He is the husband of Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Government of India in 2019.

Parakala Prabhakar was born on 2 January 1959 in Narsapuram, Andhra Pradesh (65 years; as of 2024). His zodiac sign is Capricorn. Parakara received his primary education from Lakshmi Narasamamba Municipal School in Narasapuram and completed his high school education from People’s High School in Himayat Nagar, Hyderabad. Prabhakar received his high school education from Nampally Junior College, Hyderabad and Sri YN College, Narasapuram. He graduated from Andhra Loyola College, Vijayawada and went to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi to pursue Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.). Thereafter, Parakara went to the London School of Economics (LSE) to complete his PhD. The paper he presented was titled “Security Theory and Foreign Policy Behavior: A Study of Brazil, Ghana, and Indonesia.” Prabhakar completed his thesis under the supervision of Christopher Coker in the Department of International Relations.

Parakala Prabhakar belonged to the Brahmin family. His father, Parakala Seshavatharam, was a legislator who served in three consecutive Andhra Pradesh cabinets, while his mother, Parakala Kalikamba Kalikamba is a member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He has a sister.
Prabhakar married Nirmala Sitharaman in 1986. They have a daughter, Vangmayi.
Profession
Prabhakar, who was born into a political family, has been familiar with electoral politics since childhood. However, he was not exposed to politics until he was elected president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student body by the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). In 1984, he was appointed Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the National Unionist Party of India and went to many states and universities to organize activities of the Congress Party’s student wing. In 1986, Prabhakar moved to London to further his studies. After returning from London, he was appointed as ‘Officer on Special Duty’ by Narasimha Rao for the implementation of projects of ‘Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development’ (RGNIYD). In 1994, he resigned from RGNIYD to contest the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections. Prabhakar lost the election by 20,000 votes.
In 1996, he contested the Lok Sabha by-election from Narthapuram assembly constituency and lost narrowly. Intra-party wrangling led to his resignation from Congress. In 1997, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In 1998, he contested the Lok Sabha elections from Narasapur constituency but lost again. Parakara took an active role in party affairs and became the party spokesperson in Andhra Pradesh. He became a member of the BJP’s national economic cell that guided the party’s economic policy, and of the Planning Commission of India’s task force that formulated the 10th Five-Year Plan.
In 2006, he contested the general elections from East Godavari and West Godavari constituencies and lost for the fourth time. He later resigned from the BJP. In 2008, some like-minded people approached him with the hope of building a new political platform. Chiranjeevi is the face of the party. Prabhakar supported the idea and formed the ‘Prajya Rajyaam Party’. Parakara is one of the founding general secretary and spokesperson of the party. The party ultimately won only 18 seats in the 2009 parliamentary elections, marking the end of Parakara’s electoral political career.
In June 2014, Prabhakar was appointed as Communications Advisor to the Andhra Pradesh Government. As a communications consultant, he established communications networks for the country. He also introduced social media into various government departments. Prabhakar resigned from his post on June 19, 2018, after serving the government for about four years. In his resignation letter, he mentioned that he was pained by the opposition leader’s remarks and did not want the government to be cast in any shadow of doubt.

- After the 2009 Legislative Assembly elections, Tamil actor and producer Naga Babu described Prabhakar as a “snake” and accused him of betraying the trust reposed in him by Chiranjivi. According to him, it was Prabhakar who ruined the BJP’s poll prospects ahead of the 2009 elections.
- Prabhakar opposed the idea of dividing Andhra Pradesh. In 2009, when the UPA government announced its intention to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh and grant the status of Telangana and Parakara, a group of like-minded people formed the ‘Visalandhra Mahasabha’, a group to keep Andhra Pradesh united forum.
