Rapper Krayzie Bone looks back on his sudden hospitalization in September, revealing he didn’t know how serious his condition was until “I woke up 10 days later.”
The Bone Thugs-N-Harmony star, whose real name is Anthony Henderson, spoke to Spin about his hospitalization, which began with a trip to the emergency room when he developed a persistent cough.
“One night I was up late playing Xbox and I coughed and something came out that wasn’t like normal phlegm,” said Krayzie Bone, 50. “When I spat it out, it was nothing but blood.”
Although it cleared up at first, the blood returned, so he went to the emergency room at his wife’s insistence.
“They gave me small bags into which I coughed up blood. By the time they came to take me to the room, I had used up three such bags,” he says. Spin.
Doctors told him ahead of time that “they had to put me under to see what was going on,” Krayzie Bone recalled. He texted his bandmates that he might not make it to their scheduled show in Las Vegas.
He thought he would be out of the hospital soon. But, he says, “I woke up 10 days later.”
An artery in his lung burst, and doctors were unable to stop the bleeding.

“After the second day, the bleeding didn’t stop and the doctor started to panic,” he told za Spin. “That’s when they told my wife they might want to bring the family here.”
“They said they didn’t know if I was going to get out of there,” he said.
The bleeding finally stopped on day four, and doctors kept Krayzie Bone sedated and intubated for another six days.

“When I woke up, they told me everything that happened. I had no idea I was there for 10 days,” he said.
When he regained consciousness, his Bone Thugs-N-Harmony bandmates came to the hospital – along with his family, including his father and brother who had flown in from Cleveland, leaving him to wonder, “Why the hell is everybody so nervous ? What the hell is going on?”
He continued, talking Spin, “Doctors in the ICU, I don’t know if this is what they see every day, but their perspective was dark. They said, ‘Maybe they won’t make it out of here. The lung function on the left side has completely died. He’s going to need a lung transplant.’”
But doctors eventually gave up on the procedure, as Krayzie Bone kept hitting the gym — and performing regularly with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. They decided his lungs were strong enough on their own and decided to put him on preventative medicine to avoid the arteries bursting again.

The rapper said Spin that he now has a mycetoma, which the Cleveland Clinic defines as a “fungal ball” that can grow larger and block the sinuses, and may be related to his sarcoid, as the American Journal of Roentgenology said that “mycetoma formation is a recognized complication of sarcoidosis, with the development of fungal little balls.”
Said the “Tha Crossroads” performer. Spin that even though he is in remission, “damage [sarcoidosis] done to my lungs is irreversible.”
The Mayo Clinic defines sarcoidosis as a “growth of inflammatory cells” known as granulomas, most commonly affecting the lungs.

Krayzie Bone said he is now working on putting back 25 lbs. he lost it in the hospital with the help of a personal trainer and physical therapy. He said the experience of thinking about going in for a quick scan – and getting out 10 days later – changed his outlook on life.
“Just seeing how quickly everything can change is definitely an eye-opener. I don’t take anything for granted,” he says Spin.
“Appreciate all the loved ones you have.”
