Raven-Symoné Recalls Having Her First Breast Reductions at 15: ‘Someone Said I Needed to Do It in Order to Get a Show’

Raven-Symoné opens up about what it was like to undergo breast reduction surgery at the age of 15.

During her December 5 episode Tea time with Raven & Miranda podcast — which Symoné, 38, hosts with wife Miranda Pearman-Maday, 37 — the former Disney Channel star reflected on her experience growing up in front of the camera and the pressure to fit a certain standard of beauty.

Symoné revealed that she had the first of two breast reduction surgeries on the advice of the adults around her.

“I went from a triple D all the way down to a B. Someone said I had to do it to get the show,” she recalled, adding that her father also “strongly suggested” that she get the procedure.

Symoné also shared that she opted for liposuction at the same time in an attempt to silence outside chatter about her size. “I thought, ‘Yeah, if I get lipo, will people stop calling me fat?’ And that’s how I got a two,’ she said.

The Cosby Show The alum recalled that the operation, which entailed a lot of “paperwork” because she was a minor, did not go without compilations. She had a seizure when she woke up from the anesthesia, and said she still has scars on her breasts more than 20 years later.

The actress also reflected on how times have changed — especially within the body positivity movement, noting, “There’s a wonderful embrace of the body now that I didn’t have as a young girl.”

This is not the first time Symoné has spoken openly about feeling constrained by social pressures as a young working actress.
