Bronwyn Newport has spoken of the terrifying moment she was attacked by a dog that left her with 37 puncture wounds to her arms and legs.
The The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City newcomer spoke to PEOPLE about the incident that happened back in April while she was with one of her six dogs at a dog park.
“There was a dog running around. He didn’t bark, nothing was strange to him, but he was alone,” he recalls. “So I reached out to pet him and he made a strange movement. He jerked away from me.”

The 39-year-old explains that the dog suddenly circled and rushed towards her, biting her behind the knee. At that moment, she says, the situation escalated and she “did everything wrong”.
“I know you shouldn’t scream, you shouldn’t jerk your hand. I did all these things,” she recalls. “I went completely crazy. I’ve never been bitten by a dog before. I went completely crazy and I honestly think I made it worse.”
“He bit me behind the leg. He put me on the other side of the sheet. As I tried to move away, he got his other leg on my thigh,” she continues. “I think at that point I was leaning forward or trying to push him away. He ended up hitting my right arm very badly, where my bicep is, and he grabbed my arm. I couldn’t take it off.”

Newport says a bystander at the dog park intervened to get the unattended dog off her. The police and an ambulance were called, and in the end she had to go to the hospital.
“I had 37 separate bites when I went to the emergency room. They had to do a really comprehensive review. I had stitches on both my arm and my leg,” she says. “When he squeezed my bicep, he broke it. I had a small bone fracture and the bruise was very intense and throbbing.”
Newport later learned that the dog that attacked her was a foster dog left unattended while its caretaker took a phone call.
“You need to know if your dog is a dog that can be in a dog park. You have to watch them,” she emphasizes. “If it had been an older person or someone younger than me, the injuries could have been much more serious and life-threatening. I’m thankful they didn’t.”
“I felt sorry for the dog,” she admits. “I have rescue dogs that have been through this before.”

Newport adds that the dog also had health problems that affected its behavior. She says she and her husband, Todd Bradley, paid for the dog’s treatment and made sure it was placed in a suitable home with a better environment.
The reality star tells PEOPLE that she is now “cured” and is working with someone to prevent the bite scars.
“Honestly, even as a dog lover, I was terrified of dogs for a long time after that. You just are,” she admits. But “the most important thing to me is that the dog is fine and I’m fine,” she says, noting that she didn’t press charges after the attack either.
