Panjurli is the god of Bhuta (the male boar deity), the protector of righteousness and part of the Bhuta Kora, and is portrayed as an incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu in the 2022 film Kantala. Laha. In an interview, Rishab Shetty sparked a debate by arguing that the Bhoota Kola tradition in Dakshina Kannada region is part of Hindu culture, saying:
Those gods, they’re all part of our tradition. There is no doubt that it is a part of Hindu culture and Hindu rituals. Since I am a Hindu, I believe in and respect my religion. But I won’t say others are wrong. What we are talking about is through the elements present in Hindu Dharma. ”
Netizens criticized him for portraying Panjuri as Varaha, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Rishabh then defended himself by saying that he did not want to harm people’s religious beliefs; he traveled to the coastal villages of Karnataka to conduct research in order to more accurately understand the culture where all these rituals and stories were born. In an interview, he talked about how he researched the ritual thoroughly before shooting the film, saying:
I was looking at a story about farmland, rooted in coastal Karnataka. But it’s not just the land. Bhootakola, Daivaradhane, our culture, our rituals and beliefs are all part of it. After agricultural activities, celebrations are held for 3-4 months because it is a ritual. People who leave the village will also come back. The belief surrounding it all is so strong. This is a rule. I want to bring all of them but I don’t have complete ideas and knowledge. I don’t want any problems. I don’t want anyone to be hurt or offended. I talked to people who performed these rituals. I asked them more questions about it and did more research to figure out how to proceed. I talked to people who performed these rituals. I asked them more questions about it and did more research to figure out how to do it. ”
