Shabari was born in Kolkata on Tuesday, May 7, 1957 (age 63 at the time of her death). Her star sign was Taurus. She did her degree in Philosophy (Honours) from Presidency College, Kolkata. After her marriage, she joined the University of Calcutta for her Masters in Philosophy.

After getting married and having a child, she decided to hold a clothing exhibition in 1991. The exhibition was very successful and almost all the clothes were sold out. In 1992, she invited the media and invited Indian actor Dipankar De to unveil her collection in her second exhibition. The exhibition was very successful and soon she gained huge popularity for her unique fashion style.
Her clothing line mainly focuses on menswear and the fabrics used in her collections are mainly silk and khadi. In an interview, when asked why she prefers menswear, she replied,
I sympathize with men’s dull dressing. The West has shackled us to the idea of a male dress code that we forget has a short history dating back to after the Industrial Revolution. The West has done something else as well. It has taught Indian men to depart from their own rich dress traditions. From Mohenjo Daro to the Mughals, Indian men and women loved to dress up, and they never tire of pointing out that dress style is not limited to aristocratic dress, Sherwani, Angrakha, Piran, Bandhgala, Kurtas.”
Initially, she designed a unique style for each batch of pieces and would repeat the design only when the client requested it. Later, she started her own fashion brand “Shunyaa”. She also launched a women’s clothing line, which was also very successful. In addition to men’s clothing, she also launched a diamond jewelry line for men.

She was found dead in the bathroom of her Broad Street residence in South Kolkata at 12:25 am on Friday, September 18, 2020. According to sources, she died of a stroke.
Her son said at her death,
I didn’t see her all Thursday. I thought she was busy and out at work. It’s nothing unusual. We’re both busy so we don’t see each other every day.”
Regarding Shabari’s death, her daughter-in-law Kanaklata said,
She lives alone on the first floor of our Broad Street home, while my husband Amalin and I live on the second floor. We usually meet for breakfast on the first floor before everyone goes to work. Since it was Vishwakarma Puja yesterday, we were busy on the second floor. My mother-in-law usually goes to work and we thought she must have been out. But when she did not respond to our calls and messages until the evening, we started to worry. Late at night, we entered her room, switched on the light and found her lying in the bathroom.
After her death, many popular Bengali celebrities expressed their sorrow including Parama Banerjee, Ujjani Mukherjee, Shrabonti Chatterjee, Rukmini Moitra, Pujarini Ghosh and Debesh.

- While studying at school and college, she often participated in singing and dancing competitions.
- She has received many awards for her contribution to the Indian fashion industry.
- Speaking about her sister-in-law Rita in an interview, she said,
I only did it once, just for fun. People around me were more excited than I was…my relatives, especially my sister-in-law Rita. She was a big encouragement and her name was on the invitation card. I would say she played a big role in me getting started.”
- Rahul Dev Burman, a famous Indian music director, wore a kurta and dhoti from one of her clothing collections during his final rites.
- In an interview, she revealed that in 2007, famous Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai bought clothes for her family and Abhishek Bachchan’s family to celebrate Aishwarya and Abhishek’s wedding.

I think my achievement is that MF Husain bought my stuff when my brand was not established and no one knew my name; so he bought my work because it appealed to him aesthetically.”
