Shriya started learning Kathak and Rajasthani folk dance from her mother at a very young age. She joined BHEL’s open-air theater ‘Jhankaar’, where her father used to work. At the age of 14, she received professional training in Kathak dance from Delhi-based tutor Shovana Narayan.

Shovana invited Shriya to audition for Renoo Nathan’s music video “Thirakti Kyun Hawa”. She auditioned and was selected. The music video was shot in Banaras.
Later, filmmakers from Ramoji Films (a production company) spotted her in videos and invited her to star in the Telugu film “Ishtam” in 2001.

Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK), Chennai district president Ramamurthy filed a complaint against her because her dress was so bold that it offended Hindu culture.
