Siddique Ismail

Siddique (1960-2023) was an Indian director, producer, screenwriter and actor, working primarily in Malayalam films. He is known for directing films such as Ramji Rao (1989), Chronic Bachelor (2003), Rascal Bhaskar (2015) and Big Brother (2020) .

Profession

Siddique began his career as a mockumentary artist at the Cochin Kalabhavan Performing Arts Learning Center in Cochin, India, alongside Indian film producer Lal. Later, Siddique and Lal formed a filmmaking duo, popularly known as “Siddique-Lal”, and worked as assistant directors under Indian film producer Fazil, who found them in Kalabar, Cochin. Facts/Trivia

  • Before venturing into directing, Siddique worked as a clerk at Darul Uloom VHSS Ernakulam in Kerala.
  • In an interview, Sajitha spoke about Siddique’s passion for movies and said that just four months after their marriage, Siddique quit his clerkship to join filmmaker Fazil as an assistant director; she was sixteen at the time age. Sajitha further added that she had not heard from Siddique for three months; no letters, no calls, and when he came back, she told him she was pregnant. When Sajitha gave birth at the city hospital, Siddique did not stay with her but went to watch a movie with his friends.
  • According to his wife, Sajitha, Siddiq never lost his cool. She mentioned in an interview that he never held grudges and remained friendly even when he was upset. She stressed that Siddique never raised his voice or scolded her or their children, even though he might have been angry with them.
