Broadus revealed for the first time on Thursday that she had suffered a stroke and was hospitalized.

“I had a severe stroke and I started to cry when they told me,” she announced at the time on her Instagram Story. “Like I’m only 24, what have I done in the past to deserve all this.”

Although Broadus did not provide any details about what led to the stroke or recovery, the singer has had a difficult health journey for years after being diagnosed with lupus at the age of 6.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system mistakes healthy tissues for foreign invaders and attacks them instead of targeting bad bacteria and viruses. It causes inflammation that can affect the joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs. There is currently no cure for the disease.

Because lupus affects multiple organs in the body, it can increase the risk of stroke.

In September 2023, Broadus spoke to PEOPLE about her battle with lupus and how her health has been since making lifestyle changes.

“I was good, better than ever,” she said, revealing that she had gone “all natural” and had recently taken a holistic approach to her health after a difficult journey that included a suicide attempt in 2021.

“I stopped taking all my medications about five months ago,” she said. “I just do everything natural, all kinds of herbs, sea mosses, teas. I started exercising, drinking a lot of water. Now I think my body is saying, OK, this is a new program and she’s getting used to it.”

Despite her progress, Broadus said she knows there are additional ways she can improve her health.

“It’s a continuous learning process because there’s so much more I could be doing,” she explained, noting she still struggles with “horrible food” and “not getting enough rest.”

“If I can do a whole 360-degree change and just get better, I think I’d be so good,” she said at the time. “But I tell people all the time it’s a day-by-day process. Things will take time. Nothing will happen overnight.”
