Sophia Bush Says One Tree Hill Reboot Has Been 'In Development' for Nearly 'Half a Decade' But It's Still Not 'Official'

Sophia Bush sets the record straight on how things stand with One Tree Hill restarting.

On the September 19 episode of her podcast Drama queensBush, 42, and co-host Robert Buckley answered fan questions about the reboot, which Bush and Hilarie Burton teased on Instagram in August.

While Bush noted that she “can’t tell anybody anything” yet, she shed new light on the series, which PEOPLE confirmed is in the early stages of development.

“What I can say is that after, God, almost half a decade of these conversations, we’ve been able to divide and rule in the coolest way. And those of us with TV production experience have really exciting conversations,” she revealed.

“It’s been developing for a while. I think that’s all I can say,” she continued.

“But, yes, it was this experience and really even longer than we had this wonderful show [podcasts]. But the experiences we had with fans constantly asking the best questions made us think about, you know, where our whole ragtag gang of people would be right now. [is what] has stimulated ideas. I think that’s all I can say about this podcast, but I hope we have exciting news and I hope we get great news and we have a big announcement.”

Bush, who played Brooke Davis for all nine seasons of the WB show, did admit that she wasn’t thrilled when news of the reboot broke.

“Do I wish the news hadn’t leaked before we could make it official? Sure. But if it does, I’ll be so freaking proud, just like we said, that each person can bring their expertise to the table now.”

Noting that the show’s students include “TV and film producers,” “music producers” and “novel writers,” she said, “There’s so much talent in this special group of circus performers that we are, and I don’t know… If everything goes well, it will be great now we have a big bench.”

Buckley, who played Clay Evans and joined One Tree Hill in Season 7, his co-host reiterated. “The list is big,” he said of the show’s alumni they could pull from for the reboot. “I was actually thinking about it this morning. I just started, you’ve got a bunch of killer people that you can bring in here. Like, it’s just heavy hitters from start to finish.”

He agreed that it was “shit that the news leaked,” calling it “a disservice to the fans, because you’re getting them excited about something that potentially couldn’t happen.” But regardless, “It’s also super exciting.”

“If I were a betting man, I’d say it’s going to happen,” added Buckley, 43. “Well, I hope it does. Fingers crossed. But knowing that it’s all of you, I think it’s going to happen.”
