What is the real story behind the Steeltown murders?

In the summer of 1973, three 16-year-old girls were strangled and killed, leading to the nation’s largest manhunt for murderers. The first incident occurred in July when Sandra Newton disappeared around 1 a.m. while walking 5 miles home. Two days later her body was found in a canal. The teenage girl was hit in the head and strangled with her own dress.

Two months later, in September, best friends Geraldine Hughes and Pauline Floyd were found dead in a wooded area in nearby Llandarcy after hitchhiking home from a Swansea nightclub. The two girls were also strangled and their bodies dumped seven miles from where Sandra was found.

The incident prompted a major police investigation, with a team of 150 officers questioning 35,000 people who barely matched the description of a shaggy-haired man in his early to mid-30s with a suit. mustache. A key witness saw Geraldine and Pauline get into a brightly colored Morris 1100 driven by a man so described.

However, it was not until 30 years later that the killer was identified. Thanks to the development of DNA analysis, police were able to determine that the same man committed all three murders and, after narrowing the list of suspects, they found Paul Kappen.

Local auto thief Paul was on a crime database in and around the Port Talbot area, but was only 7 years old at the time of the murder. This led the police to consider Paul’s father, Joseph, who owned a light-colored Morris 1100. He was questioned in 1973 but got an alibi from his wife and said his car broke down on the night of the murder.

When investigators knocked on Joseph’s door to conduct more DNA tests, they learned he had died of lung cancer in 1990. After taking DNA samples from Joseph’s ex-wife and daughter, all signs were found. All show him to be a murderer. In the end, the exhumation and forensic examination of Josip’s body revealed the truth. He really is a killer.
